Webster Softball Sweeps First Player of the Week Honors for 2011 Season

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the Spring sports players of the week for the week of February 28 - March 6.

BASEBALL - PITCHER
Spalding University's Tyler Brown, a freshman from Joliet, Ill. (Joliet West), has been named the Diamond Sports SLIAC Baseball Hitter of the Week for the week of February 28-March 6.

Brown, a 5-7 left-handed pitcher, struck out 10 batters in 9.0 innings pitched, as Spalding went on to defeat Centre College 3-2 in 10 innings. He gave up six hits while allowing only one run, zero earned, and no walks.

SOFTBALL - PITCHER
Webster University's Trisha Thompson, a freshman from Glendale, Ariz. (Xavier Prep), has been named the SLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of February 28-March 6.

Thompson, a 5-7 right-handed pitcher, made her collegiate debut with two complete game victories in her first two starts and another win in relief. In her first game, Thompson took the mound in the fourth inning and pitched the Gorloks out of a two-out, runners on first and third situation. She finished the game allowing one hit, no walks and striking out three batters as Webster defeated Mississippi College 7-6 in eight innings.

Thompson started in Webster's second game versus Millsaps College. In 7.0 complete innings she struck out seven batters and recorded her first career victory. Thompson also started and threw 7.0 complete innings in the Gorloks 2-1 win over Aurora University.

Webster opened the season 6-2 at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

SOFTBALL - HITTER
Webster University's Hannah Brindisi, a junior transfer from Howell, Mich. (John A. Logan CC), has been named the SLIAC Softball Hitter of the Week for the week of February 28-March 6.

Brindisi, a first baseman, hit .348 in her first week of action as a Gorlok. She had eight hits, including two home runs and nine RBI, while also posting a .448 on-base percentage and a .652 slugging percentage. She was also errorless in the field with no errors in 55 chances.

Brindisi went 1-for-3 in Webster's season opener, tallying her first home run of the season and helping to lead her squad to a 2-1 victory versus Millsaps College. In a second game against Millsaps she went 2-for-3 at the plate with another home run as the Gorloks recorded a 4-3 win.

Webster opened the season 6-2 at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

MEN'S TENNIS
Greenville College's Joe Newlin, a senior from St. Louis, Mo. (McCluer), has been named the SLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of February 28-March 6.

Newlin recorded two victories last week. He posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory at #1 Singles against Illinois College's Mike Evans. He also partnered with teammate Ian Wolf to record an 8-0 win at #1 Doubles against Illinois College.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Principia College's Hilary Frandsen, a freshman from. St. Augustine, Fla. (Bartram Triac), has been named the SLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of February 28-March 6.

Frandsen went 2-0 at #4 singles and 1-1 at #2 doubles for the Panthers last week. She posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory in singles play against Cecilia Sanchez-Guillen from Lindenwood University-Belleville. She also rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at #4 singles against Jenna Riehl from Kalamazoo College.

In doubles play, Frandsen partnered with teammate Marianna Hronek and the pair won 8-3 at #2 doubles against Lindenwood-Belleville.
