Principia Athletes Grab Five Athlete of the Week Honors for September 6-12

St. Louis, Mo. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the Athletes of the Week for the week of September 6-12.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Principia College's Wylie Mangelsdorf, a freshman from Palmer, Alaska, has been named the Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of September 6-12.

Mangelsdorf placed 17th out of 204 runners at the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College. He ran the 8K course in 27:00 and helped lead Principia to a ninth place finish out of 14 teams competing.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Westminster College's Sarah Koestner, a freshman from Russellville, Mo., has been named the Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of September 6-12.

Koestner placed 12th out of 95 runners and was the first NCAA DIII runner to cross the finish line at the Central Missouri Mule Run hosted by the University of Central Missouri. She posted a time of 16:32 on the 2.5 mile course.

MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Webster University's Clint Carder, a sophomore from DeSoto, Mo., has been named the Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 6-12.

Carder, a forward, scored the game-winning goal in two of Webster's three victories last week. He had two goals, including the game-winner in a 2-0 victory versus Illinois College, and he added the game-winner in a 3-0 win against Concordia University (Ill.). Carder also scored the lone goal in regulation time in the Gorloks 2-1 double overtime victory versus Augustana College (Ill.).

MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Webster University's Alex Cupp, a junior from St. Louis, Mo. (Lutheran South), has been named the Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 6-12.

Cupp, a goalkeeper and first year transfer, played every minute in goal and recorded three victories for the Gorloks this past week. He had six saves in a 2-0 shutout versus Illinois College and added three saves in a 3-0 shutout versus Concordia University (Ill.).

In Webster's 2-1 double overtime victory versus Augustana College (Ill.), Cupp defended against 25 shots and recorded five saves. Since allowing seven goals in Webster's season opener, Cupp has allowed only three goals in his last five games (485 minutes) for a 0.55 goals-against average.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Principia College's Alicia Girbes-Pierce, a junior from San Diego, Calif. (Mira Mesa), has been named the Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 6-12.

Girbes-Pierce, a forward, recorded three goals and one assist as Principia went 2-1 last week. She had two goals and one assist in a 5-1 victory versus Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. She added one goal, the game-winner, in a 2-1 win against North Park University.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Principia College's Lauren Wienecke, a junior from Tulsa, Okla. (Jenks), has been named the Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 6-12.

Wienecke, a defender, started and played 90 minutes against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and North Park University and 100 minutes against Elmhurst College last week. She was the anchor of the Panthers defense, holding both Rose-Hulman and Elmhurst scoreless until the final minute of each game. Wienecke was also dangerous getting into the attack out of the backfield and provided an important assist against North Park to put the Panthers on the scoreboard first.

VOLLEYBALL - OFFENSIVE
Principia College's Kiersten Andersen, a sophomore from Sterling Heights, Mich. (Aldai E. Stevenson), has been named the Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 6-12.

Andersen, an outside hitter, led Principia in their first win of the season with 25 kills, 12 digs, two service aces and one block as they defeated Wilmington College (Ohio) 3-2. She recorded double digits in kills in all four matches played last week to finish with 60 kills total on the week and an average of 3.75 kills per set. Andersen also recorded double digits in digs in three of four matches, for 38 total digs.

"Kiersten [Andersen] was our offensive weapon this past weekend," said Principia head coach Mary Ann Sprague. "She was set off of a lot of difficult passes and hit against a double block in all four matches."

VOLLEYBALL - DEFENSIVE
Principia College's Tara Edwards, a junior from Lake Fores, Calif. (El Toro), has been named the Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 6-12.

Edwards, a setter, recorded 36 digs, two blocks, seven service aces and 107 set assists in four matches played last week. She had 11 digs, three service aces, one block and 27 set assists, as well as adding nine kills in a 3-2 loss (25-20, 25-21, 18-24, 15-25, 7-15) to Franklin College (Ind.). Edwards helped lead the Panthers to a 3-2 victory versus Wilmington College (Ohio) with eight digs, one service ace and 46 set assists. She also recorded double digit digs (10) in a 3-0 loss to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

"Tara [Edwards] held blockers, distributed the ball well and was a vital part of the offense with her added kills," commented Principia head coach, Mary Ann Sprague. "Every team would try to take her out of setting by hitting at her, but she dug the ball well too."
