Webster Student-Athletes Take Four Player of the Week Honors for March 5-11

St. Louis, Mo. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the Players of the Week for the week of March 5-11.

BASEBALL - PITCHER
Fontbonne University's Jordan Jereb, a senior from Saint Bede, Ill., has been named the Diamond Sports Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 5-11.

Jereb, a right-handed hurler, allowed only two hits and one walk in 8.0 innings on the mound. He also struck out a total of six batters and recorded the win as Fontbonne defeated Millikin University, 4-0.

BASEBALL - HITTER
Webster University's Cody Stevenson, a junior from Centralia, Ill., has been named the Diamond Sports Baseball Hitter of the Week for the week of March 5-11.

Stevenson, a centerfielder, posted a .800 batting average and a .888 on-base percentage in nine plate appearances in two games played last week. He went 1-for-2 with two walks in a 1-0 loss to Wheaton College. Stevenson then recorded three hits in three at-bats, with two walks, two runs scored and one RBI in a 5-2 victory versus Ripon College. He also added two stolen bases in the win.

SOFTBALL - PITCHER
Blackburn College's Mary Chamberlain, a freshman from Johnsburg, Ill., has been named the Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 5-11.

Chamberlain made three appearances last week and recorded one complete game victory. She pitched 1.3 innings of relief and recorded one strikeout in an 11-3 loss to Mt. Aloysius. She also threw 1.0 inning of relief and had one strikeout in an 8-3 loss to Mary Washington.

Chamberlain's best outing resulted in a complete game, 3-2 victory against Gwynedd Mercy. In 7.0 innings on the mound, she struck out three batters, gave up no earned runs and allowed only one walk. Blackburn finished 4-4 on the week with two wins against Gwynedd Mercy and one win against both Chatham University and LaRoche College.

SOFTBALL - HITTER
Blackburn College's Brianna Markel, a junior from East Alton, Ill. (Roxana), has been named the Softball Hitter of the Week for the week of March 5-11.

Markel, a centerfielder and leadoff hitter, had a great start to the season and is leading the Beavers in batting, hits, doubles, triples, home runs and stolen bases through their first eight games. She hit .522 at the plate with 12 hits, 10 runs scored, four RBI, three doubles, two home runs and one triple, while also going 9-for-10 in stolen base attempts. Markel also had six, multi-hit games.

Markel went 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI in Blackburn's 5-4 win over Chatham University. She then added two hits, four runs, one home run, one RBI and two stolen bases in a 16-11 victory versus Gwynedd Mercy. Markel had two hits, two runs, one double and one RBI in an 11-0 win against LaRoche College. She also tallied two hits, including a homerun and two stolen bases in a 3-2 win over Gwynedd Mercy.

MEN'S TENNIS
Webster University's Diego Alarcon, a junior from Quito, Ecuador (American School), has been named the Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 5-11.

Alarcon won his sixth straight singles and sixth straight doubles matches this season in a 9-0 victory versus Fontbonne University. He won at #2 singles, 6-2, 6-0, playing there for the first time this season. He is 7-1 on the year in singles, previously playing at the #1 and #3 spots. Alarcon also improved to 6-2 in doubles, all at the #1 position. He and teammate Francissco Cortez won 8-0 against Fontbonne.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Webster University's Lauren Hacker, a freshman from Tempe, Ariz. (Corona del Sol), has been named the Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 5-11.

Hacker, who had played six singles matches at #5, played the #4 spot for the first time versus Fontbonne University and the #3 spot for the first time versus Stephens College. She came through with 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 victories respectively, improving her singles record to 6-2 overall. Hacker also improved to 5-3 in doubles play as she and teammate Lindsey Hays won 8-1 against Fontbonne University at #2 doubles.

The Webster women went 2-0 last week defeating Fontbonne University, 9-0, and Stephens College, 8-1.

MEN'S GOLF
Webster University's Matt Vanderbeek, a freshman from Fallon, Nev. (Churchill County), has been named the Men's Golfer of the Week for the week of March 5-11.

Vanderbeek led Webster in a dual meet victory versus Husson College. In a driving rain and winds on the course at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., Vanderbeek managed to shoot an 80 as the weather drove up scores on both sides. He also finished first out of 12 players competing.
