Webster Wins Eighth Consecutive SLIAC All-Sports Trophy

ST. LOUIS – For the eighth consecutive year, and the 12th time since the award’s inception in 1999, Webster University has captured the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) All-Sports Trophy.  The Gorloks amassed 91 points in 12 sports, topping runner-up Westminster College (Mo.).

The SLIAC All-Sports Championship Trophy is determined by awarding points based on each schools finish in the Conference’s 12 sports, earning nine points for a first-place finish, eight points for a second-place finish, etc.  Teams finishing tied split the points for the tied spot and the spot(s) immediately following (two teams finishing tied for third receives 6.5 – seven points for third-place and six points for fourth-place).

Webster won the Conference title in five sports – baseball, men's basketball, women's cross country, men's golf and women's tennis - and finished with a share of the Conference title in volleyball. The Gorloks also finished second in women's soccer. Westminster won two Conference titles, and totaled 73 points in 12 sports.  The Blue Jays won the men's soccer and women's basketball titles outright, placed second in men's tennis and tied for second place in men's basketball.

Fontbonne University, which finished third in the SLIAC All-Sports Trophy (69 points), captured the softball championship. Greenville College shared the volleyball title along with Webster to finish fourth (65.5 points) in the All-Sports standings. Principia College finished fifth in the All-Sports standings (62 points) behind a Conference title in women’s soccer, men's cross country and men's tennis.

The 2011-12 season marks the second year that the SLIAC All-Sports Trophy has been determined by total points, rather than a points average. The change was made to further encourage the NCAA Division III philosophy of broad-based athletics programs.
