Athletes From Seven SLIAC Schools Claim Player of the Week Honors

St. Louis, Mo. - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the Athletes of the Week for the week of September 24-30.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Spalding University's Abram Deng, a senior from Louisville, Ky. (Central), has been named the Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of September 24-30. This marks the second time this season that he has earned the honor.

Deng posted a new school record with a time of 25:13.85 at the Greater Louisville Classic. He placed 12th out of 362 runners competing in the Men's "Blue" Race, which featured teams from NCAA Division I, II and III. Deng was also the top DIII runner in the race and led Spalding to a 36th place finish out of 46 teams competing.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Principia College's Casey Powell, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo. (Cheyenne Mountain), has been named the Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of September 24-30. This marks the third time this season and second consecutive week that she has earned the honor.

Powell won the Olde English Classic hosted by Beloit College with a time of 20:11.1. She pulled away in the final 800 meters of the 5K race to place first out of 91 runners. Principia finished second of the eight teams competing, finishing behind Mt. Mercy College.

MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Fontbonne University's Charlie Chafin, a senior from Dittmer, Mo. (St. Pius), has been named the Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 24-30.

Chafin, a midfielder, had two goals and one assist in two games played last week. He started the week with an assist on the game-winning goal as the Griffins defeated Washington University-St. Louis for the first time in program history. Chafin then had two goals, including the game-winner, in Fontbonne's 5-1 SLIAC opening win over Blackburn College.

MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Spalding University's Logan Spencer, a freshman from Henderson, Ky. (Henderson County), has been named the Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 24-30.

Spencer, a goalkeeper, tallied 24 saves and allowed only two goals in 210:00 total minutes in goal last week. He had 10 saves in a 3-1 victory versus Bluffton University. Spencer then added 14 saves as the Golden Eagles battled Greenville College to a 1-1 draw through two overtimes in conference action.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Blackburn College's Sammi Ferguson, a junior from Jerseyville, Ill. (Jersey Community), has been named the Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 24-30.

Ferguson, a forward, posted five goals and one assist in two games played last week. She recorded a hat trick with three goals in Blackburn's 7-0 victory over Robert Morris University-Springfield. She then added two goals and one assist in a 4-3 loss to Fontbonne University in both team's SLIAC opener.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Webster University's Kristen Muehlenfeld, a junior from Quincy, Ill., has been named the Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 24-30.

Muehlenfeld, a defender, has helped the Gorloks post five shutouts this season, including a 2-0 win versus Illinois College last week. According to Webster head coach Luigi Scire, Muehlenfeld's "leadership and strong play has resulted in the team only giving up eight goals in 10 games."

VOLLEYBALL - OFFENSIVE
Greenville College's Tricia Gall, a senior from Troy, Ill. (Triad), has been named the Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 24-30.

Gall, a middle blocker, tallied 34 kills in 55 total attempts for a .582 attack percentage in three matches played last week. She also had 10 blocks and five service aces for the week. She had 20 kills (6.67 per set) and four total blocks in a 3-0 win versus Fontbonne University. Gall added another four blocks, nine kills, five service aces and had a .692 attack percentage in a 3-0 victory over MacMurray College. She finished the week with five kills in eight attempts and two blocks in only one set played as Greenville defeated Eureka College 3-0.

VOLLEYBALL - DEFENSIVE
Westminster College's Michelle Fandl, a senior from High Ridge, Mo. (Northwest), has been named the Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the week of September 24-30.

Fandl, a defensive specialist, recorded 73 digs in five matches played last week, including 5.33 digs per set in conference action. She had 15 digs in a 3-0 loss to Illinois College and 20 digs in a 3-1 loss to William Woods University. Fandl also added six digs as the Blue Jays defeated Central Methodist 3-1 in non-conference action. In SLIAC play, Fandl recorded 14 and 18 digs respectively as Westminster won both of its conference matches last week, 3-0 versus Blackburn College and Fontbonne University.
