SLIAC Game of the Week - Jan. 28

The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Game of the Week is a weekly feature that highlights a key match-up in the conference. This week's game of the week is a women's basketball contest between Fontbonne University and Principia College.

About Fontbonne
At 5-11 Fontbonne is looking to get their season back on track. The Griffins have dropped four of their last five games including a 75-73 loss last Saturday to Iowa Wesleyan. In that game Chelsey Freymuth scored a game-high 21 points as the Griffins shot 51-percent from the field but it was not enough to overcome Iowa Wesleyan's 12 three-pointers.

Fontbonne is averaging 62.2 points per game this season and allowing 70.9 points per game. They are shooting 36-percent from the field and average just 3.6 three's per game. Their leading scorer is Freymuth, a senior forward, who averages 10.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Nicole Joerger is the team's top outside threat, averaging 8.4 points per game and knocking down 20 three's this season. Olivia Hollander leads the team in rebounding at 5.8 rebounds per game and chips in with 7.2 points per game.

About Principia
Principia is coming off a 60-46 loss to Greenville in their last outing, on Saturday. Principia will be looking to get back into the win column for the first time since December when they defeated MacMurray, for their lone conference win so far this season. Principia is led by first year head coach Collie Bushong.

Principia is averaging 48.2 points per game on offense and allowing 67.9 points per game. The Panthers are 5th in the conference in three-point percentage at 28-percent and average 3.7 made three's per game. Rachel Perea and Spencer Randolph are tied for the team lead in scoring at 11.3 points per game. Perea also averaged 8.1 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game while Randolph leads the team with 26 made three-pointers. Karina Olsen is third on the team in scoring at 8.2 points per game and averages a team high 9.1 rebounds per game.

Game Notes

  • Fontbonne leads Principia in the all-time series 44-7, including eight straight wins.
  • Fontbonne and Principia have previously met 51 times. That marks the most game against any SLIAC opponent for Principia and the second most for Fontbonne.
  • Principia's Rachel Perea is also a standout soccer player for the Panthers, earning Honorable Mention All-Conference honors this past fall. 
  • Fontbonne is currently trailing Westminster for the final spot into the SLIAC Tournament. The Griffins have played two less games and are three behind in the win column.
