SLIAC Game of the Week - Oct. 22

The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Game of the Week is a weekly feature that highlights a key match-up in the conference. This week's SLIAC Game of the Week is the men's soccer game between Greenville College and Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. on Saturday, October 26th.

At a Glance
This weekend's game between Greenville and Westminster pits the two hottest teams in the conference against each other. At the start of the week both teams are on a conference best three game winning streak. Greenville is looking to secure a spot into the SLIAC Tournament while Westminster remains the only undefeated team in conference play.

About the Panthers
Greenville starts the week 5-7-3 overall and 4-1 in the SLIAC. Their three game winning streak has included victories over Iowa Wesleyan, MacMurray and Eureka. The Panthers will square off against Blackburn on Wednesday before facing Westminster on Saturday. After winning their season opening game the Panthers hit a cold streak and did not find the win column again until late September. However since then the Panthers are 4-2 overall and have outscored their opponents 16-3 in those six games.

On the season Greenville has scored 26 goals while allowing 27, ranking them 6th and and 5th in the league. Greenville is led offensively by Dusty Knoll and Jacob Krisher who are tied for the team lead with seven goals. Krisher has added four assists and is tied for third in the SLIAC in total points with 18. The Panthers have split time in net however Thomas Crown has played the majority of the minutes with nearly 1,000 minutes of action. Crown has stopped 62 shots and recorded two shutouts this season.

About the Blue Jays
Westminster begins the week with a 6-7-1 overall record and a 5-0 mark in the SLIAC. They have had a similar season as Greenville, taking awhile to find their footing. The Blue Jays did not record their first win until September 21. However since that time they have put together a 6-2 overall record and are undefeated in conference play. Their current three game winning streak includes wins over MacMurray, Fontbonne and Spalding. The Blue Jays will face Iowa Wesleyan on Wednesday before taking on Greenville on Saturday.

Westminster has scored 29 goals this season, good for 4th in the league, while allowing 24 goals which is 6th in the SLIAC. The Blue Jays have a balanced offense with 12 different players netting a goal this season. The trio of Drew Cook, Connor Hollrah and Gcinmuzi Shongwe are tied for the team lead with five goals while Hollrah leads the team with three assists. Goalkeeper Raul Romero, a two time SLIAC Defender of the Week winner, has stopped 46 shots in almost 900 minutes this season.

Game Notes

  • Greenville and Westminster are tied for the league high with five overtime games this season.
  • The two teams met twice last season with Greenville winning 2-0 in the regular season and Westminster winning 1-0 in overtime in the SLIAC Semi-finals. 
  • The all-time series between Greenville and Westminster is tied at 13-13.
