SLIAC Game of the Week - Dec. 3

The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Game of the Week is a weekly feature that highlights a key match-up in the conference this week. This week's SLIAC Game of the Week is the Greenville College and Webster University men's basketball game on Wednesday, December 4th.

This week begins conference play in the SLIAC and features a match-up for early positioning in the standings. This week Greenville College, currently 4-2 overall, will head to Webster University, 2-2 overall, with both teams in the top three of the conference standings. The two will tip off Wednesday, December 4th at 8 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.

About Greenville
Greenville has played a conference high six games already this season and are coming off a 76-49 loss to Division I foe Western Illinois University. That loss snapped the Panthers four game winning streak. On the year Greenville is averaging 75.8 points per game, third most in the SLIAC, and are the league's top shooting three-point team at 39-percent.

The Panthers feature a balanced attack with five players averaging at least 8.5 points per game including a trio of players averaging in double figures. Ron Harris is leading the way so far this season, averaging 13.5 points per game, and has already captured the league's Player of the Week honors once. Harris is shooting 55-percent from the field and averages a team high 7.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. Tim Daniel has been the team's top sharp-shooter, hitting on 48-percent of his three-point attempts and averaging 10.8 points per game while Alex Mumphard, an honorable mention All-Conference performer last year, is averaging 10.4 points per game this season.

About Webster
Webster, who was picked fourth in the SLIAC Preseason poll, is looking to find consistency this season after rotating wins and losses. The Gorloks won the season opener and then followed with a loss to Rust, win over Dominican and most recently a loss to Elmhurst. Webster is averaging 75.0 points per game, fourth most in the conference. The Gorloks are also the second best defensive team in the conference, allowing just 65.2 points per game and averaging a league high 10 steals per game.

Webster has used a strong inside-outside combination of Kevin Miller and Ahmad Smith. Miller, a 6'8" center, is back with the team after missing last year and is averaging 14.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while shooting 52-percent from the field. Smith leads the team in scoring with 15.5 points per game and is averaging 2.2 three-pointers made per game. The Gorlok defense is sparked by 2013 SLIAC All-Defensive Team member Hollis Edwards. Edwards, the teams point guard, is averaging 6.0 points, 3.2 assists and 2.2 steals per game this year.

Game Notes

  • Webster leads the all-time series against Greenville 25-13, including the last eight meetings. Greenville's last win in the series was Jan. 20, 2010 in double overtime.
  • Greenville and Webster have already played two common opponents; Elmhurst and Dominican. Greenville swept both teams, winning 71-66 over Elmhurst and 93-65 over Dominican while Webster split, winning 69-54 over Dominican and falling 71-70 to Elmhurst.
  • Not surprsingly with their early season success both Greenville and Webster rank second and third in the conference in field goal percentage.
  • This game features three of the top nine scorers in the league (Webster's Smith and Miller and Greenville's Harris).
  • Webster is the only team in the league with two players in the top ten of scoring.
