Mangelsdorf Leads Principia To Championship

Principia College's Wylie Mangelsdorf took charge on Saturday and helped lead his team to a 2013 SLIAC Men's Cross Country Championship. Mangelsdorf dominated today's race in capturing the individual title and helping his team to their 5th conference title in program history.

Wylie Mangelsdorf capped his senior year with another standout performance as he captured the 2013 SLIAC Individual Championship, finishing the 8K race with a blistering time of 24:30. Mangelsdorf's pace was record for SLIAC championship, besting the previous mark set in 2010 of 24:58. Mangelsdorf took control of the race early and was not challenged as he had opened up a minute and half lead halfway through the race.

With Mangelsdorf leading the way, the Principia Panthers were able to secure the 2013 SLIAC Team Championship. The Panthers had two of the top three runners, with Mangelsdorf taking first and teammate Derrick Fleming finishing third with a time of 25:36, and finished with an average time of 25:56. The Panthers finished the race with 43 points, 21 points ahead of the second place team and last year's champions Spalding University. Webter University's Ethan Jeffries, a top 10 finisher last year, took second place in the race with a time of 25:17 Following Principia and Spalding was Greenville College with 70 points.

Following the race the conference announced their 2013 award winners. Principia swept all individual honors with Wylie Mangelsdorf being named Runner of the Year Head Coach Chuck Wilcoxen taking Coach of the Year and Shane Witters-Hicks earning Newcomer of the Year honors. In addition the Principia team received the SLIAC Sportsmanship Award.

The 2013 SLIAC All-Conference First Team consisted of: Wylie Mangelsdorf (Principia), Ethan Jeffries (Webster), Derrick Fleming (Principia), Haile Jemane (Spalding), Bryant Simpson (Greenville), Jesse Edwards (Westminster) and Josh Dees (Greenville). The Second Team was: Matt Borst (Westminster), Nathan Mark (Spalding), Jason Hickson (Webster), Shane Witters-Hicks (Principia), Justin Hornerker (Fontbonne), Brandon Price (Spalding) and Kynan Witters-Hicks (Principia).
