SLIAC Players of the Week - October 7th
The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced the Players of the Week for October 7th. The following student-athletes earned this week's honors Sam Kersting, Eileen Koppy, Sarah Litwiller, Wylie Mangelsdorf, Josh Papes, Tess Rountree, Tyler Thomas and Ellen Woolsey.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Wylie Mangelsdorf (Principia College) Mangelsdorf, a
senior from Palmer, Alas., fought his way through a crowded 8K
course at the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational and won the race with
a time of 26:08. Mangelsdorf pulled away in the fourth mile and
finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of the next competitor. This marks
the third week and second in a row that he has been named Player of
the Week.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Sarah Litwiller (Principia College) Litwiller, a junior
from Concord, Calif., took 6th place in the 6K Wisconsin Lutheran
Invitational. Competing against a field with 29 other teams
Litwiller finished her race in 23:45, just over 30 seconds behind
the race winner. This marks the third time this season, and second
week in a row, that Litwiller has earned weekly honors.
MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Josh Papes (Webster University) Papes, a junior
midfielder from St. Louis, Mo., had a hand in two of his team's
three goals in a 3-0 win over Greenville College. Papes tallied a
goal and an assist in the victory for Webster in helping the
Gorloks to their fourth consecutive victory.
MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Tyler Thomas (Webster University) Thomas, a junior
midfielder from Troy, Ill., was a key member of the Gorlok defense
that recorded their fourth straight shutout. Thomas helped Webster
limit Greenville to just three shots, including one shot on goal in
last week's contest; down from the near 10 shots and five shots on
goal Greenville was averaging entering the game.
WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Eileen Koppy (Westminster College) Koppy, a sophomore
forward from St. Louis, Mo., scored two of her team's three goals
in a 3-0 road win over Blackburn last week. Koppy netted the first
goal, and eventual game-winner, at the 27 minute mark before added
an insurance goal mid-way through the second-half.
WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Ellen Woolsey (Westminster College) Woolsey, a freshman
goalkeeper from Marshall, Mo., helped blank Blackburn College, who
entered the game as one of the nation's top scoring teams. Woolsey
stopped both shots she faced in recording the shutout and helping
her team notch their first conference victory of the season. This
marks the second time this season Woolsey has won the award.
VOLLEYBALL - OFFENSIVE
Tess Rountree (Principia College) Rountree, a junior
outside hitter from Paso Robles, Calif., finished the week
averaging 4.2 kills per set with 42 total kills in 10 sets.
Rountree topped double digits in kills in two of three matches on
the week including a 20 kill performance Hannibal-LaGrange College.
On the week she finished with just six attack errors and three
service aces. She also added 5.3 digs per set this week for the
Panthers in helping her team to a perfect 3-0 record. This is the
second time this season Rountree has been named Offensive Player of
the Week.
VOLLEYBALL - DEFENSIVE
Sam Kersting (Webster University) Kersting, a junior
middle hitter from St. Louis, Mo., was a wall at the net this week
averaging 1.9 blocks per set. Kersting finished the week with 19
total blocks in just three matches and was consistent as she
finished with at least six total blocks in all three apperances.
Kersting totaled a week high seven total blocks against Millikin
and had four solo blocks in a 3-0 win over Iowa Wesleyan. Kersting
was also a force on offense, averaging 3.4 kills per set while
hitting .452 on the week.
SPECIAL MENTIONS
- Lexi Collier, Westminster (Volleyball)- Collier finished with 12 kills against Iowa Wesleyan and set a school record with a .900 hitting percentage in a win over Blackburn finishing with nine kills.
- Savanna Sprague, Principia (Volleyball)- Sprague, a setter, had an all-around outstanding week averaging 10.2 assists and 3.0 digs with 1.4 kills per set. She also served 97% on the week.
