SLIAC Players of the Week - Oct. 28th

The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced the Players of the Week for October 28th. The following student-athletes earned this week's honors Jess Edwards, Sarah Koestner, Gabriela Martin, Rachel Perea, Tess Rountree, Jamie Schollenbruch, Alex Vargas and Jeff Wallner.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Jesse Edwards (Westminster College) Edwards, a sophomore from Rogersville, Mo., placed in the top 20 of last week's 8K race. He finished with a time of 28:08 and placed 18th overall while helping his team to a 4th place overall finish.

 

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Sarah Koestner (Westminster College) Koestner, a senior from Lohman, Mo., helped her team to a 2nd place finish last weekend. Koestner finished her 5K course with a time of 20:06 and placed 8th individually out of 44 runners. This marks the second time this season she has won weekly honors.

 

MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Alex Vargas (Eureka College) Vargas, a junior from East Peoria, Ill., scored in two of his team's three goals last week; recording the first collegiate goals of his career. Vargas found the back of the net against MacMurray for his first career goal and added a goal and an assist in his team's win over Lincoln Christian. Vargas finished the week with two goals and one assist for five total points.
MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Jeff Wallner (Webster University) Wallner, a junior from Eureka, Mo., helped his team record a pair of wins last week over conference foes including a shutout victory. Wlalner and his teammates limited the opposition to just fives shots on goal in two games last week. Against Spalding Wallner led a defense that limited the league's top shooting team to almost half their season average. Wallner and Webster followed that game with a shutout win over MacMurray.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Gabriela Martin (Principia College) Martin, a sophomore from Newburyport, Mass., tallied three goals in her team's two wins last week. Martin capped off a 4-0 win over Fontbonne with a pair of goals and followed with a one goal and one assist performance against Eureka. Martin finished the week with three goals and one assist for seven total points.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Rachel Perea (Principia College) Perea, a freshman from St. Louis, Mo., helped her team's defense shutdown their opponents in a pair of shutout wins. Playing at centerback Perea and the defense was able to limit Fontbonne's top three scorers to just one shot. They followed that performance by holding Eureka to just two shots in a shutout victory to end the week. This marks the second time this season Perea has won the weekly award.

VOLLEYBALL - OFFENSIVE
Tess Rountree (Principia College) Rountree, a junior from Paso Robles, Calif., was impressive in her team's three outings last week; averaging 4.36 kills per set. Rountree's standout performance was against Iowa Wesleyan when she recorded 25 kills. On the week she finished with 48 kills in 11 sets. In addition to her offensive performance she added 69 digs on the week including a 40 dig match against Iowa Wesleyan. This is the fourth time this season Rountree has won a weekly award.

 

VOLLEYBALL - DEFENSIVE
Jamie Schollenbruch (Greenville College) Schollenbruch, a sophomore from Decatur, Ill., earned weekly honors after averaging 6.29 digs per set last week. Schollenbruch recorded 45 digs in a win over Westminster and ended the week with 88 digs in 14 sets. This is the third time this season Schollenbruch has been honored with the weekly award.

 

SPECIAL MENTIONS

  • Lexi Collier, Westminster College (Volleyball) Collier recorded double digit kills in three of four matches last week and hit .446 on the week with 45 kills and just five errors. She also added 12 total blocks on the week.
  • David Flores, Eureka College (Men's Soccer) Flores finished with 16 saves against Principia, one save short of his career high and also picked up second career win against Lincoln Christian.
  • Sierra Sprague, Principia College (Volleyball) Sprague averaged 5.38 digs per set last week including a 31 dig outing against Iowa Wesleyan, the fourth most in Principia's history for a five set match.
