SLIAC Players of the Week - Oct. 27

This week's SLIAC Player of the Week winners saw several student-athletes rise to the occasion to help their teams pick up important wins as the post-season nears. This weeks' winners are Aden Abdirahman, Elisa Burkman, Tiffany Hazelwonder, Maddie Redohl, Raul Belman Romero, and Jamie Schollenbruch.

MEN'S SOCCER (OFFENSIVE)
Aden Abdirahman, Spalding University

Abdirahman, a sophomore forward from Louisville, Ky., had an impressive week as Spalding recorded a pair of conference wins. He recorded two goals and two assists in his team's win over Eureka. Abdirahman added a game winning goal in his team's 2-0 win over Fontbonne. On the week Abdirahman finished with three goals and two assists for eight total points with one game-winning goal.

 

MEN'S SOCCER (DEFENSIVE)
Raul Belman Romero, Westminster College

Romero, a sophomore goalkeeper, allowed just one goal in two outings in net last week to earn Player of the Week honors. Romero allowed one goal while stopping four shots in his team's loss to Webster. He followed with a double overtime shutout win over Principia in which he stopped all five shots he faced. On the week Romero finished with a .900 save percentage and a 0.45 goals-against average, stopping nine shots in 200 minutes of action.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER (OFFENSIVE)
Tiffany Hazelwonder, MacMurray College

Hazelwonder, a sophomore from Troy, Mo., propelled the Highlanders to their first conference wins of the 2014 season. Hazelwonder recorded two goals, including the game winning goal, and one assist as the Highlanders defeated Iowa Wesleyan. She followed with a hat trick, scoring all three of her team's goals, in a win over Eureka. On the week Hazelwonder finished with five goals and one assist for 11 total points. She scored her five goals on just eights shots on goal and finished with two game winning goals.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (DEFENSIVE)
Maddie Redohl, Fontbonne University

Redohl, a freshman from St. Louis, Mo., anchored the Griffin backline that recorded a pair of shutouts over conference opponents last week. Redohl and the Griffin defense limited Greenville to just two shots in an overtime win. They followed with another 1-0 win as the topped Spalding, with Redohl marking the conference's leading scorer and keeping her off the board. With the wins Fontbonne tied a school record for wins in a season and remain undefeated in SLIAC play.

VOLLEYBALL (OFFENSIVE)
Elisa Burkman, Spalding University

Burkman, a senior from Louisville, Ky., kept her team in the running for the post-season with a pair of wins last week including topping then first-place Westminster. Burkman recorded 10 kills in a 3-0 sweep of Eureka, finishing with just one error and a .375 hitting percentage. She then powered her team to a 3-1 win over Westminster, recording 18 kills with just two errors. On the week Burkman hit .357 and finished with 28 kills in two matches. She added 11 digs and averaged 4.8 points per set.

VOLLEYBALL (DEFENSIVE)
Jamie Schollenbruch, Greenville College

Schollenbruch, a junior from Decatur, Ill., is this week's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Panthers defense in a 3-1 win over Fontbonne last week. Schollenbruch finished the four set match with 24 digs, averaging 6.0 digs per set. She added four service aces in the win as the Panthers moved back into first-place in the SLIAC standings.

Other Notables:

  • Michaela Balducci, Eureka (Volleyball) Balducci finished with 26 kills in a five set battle against Iowa Wesleyan, adding 16 digs.
  • Zac Bozarth, MacMurray College (Men' Soccer) Bozarth recorded a hat trick in his team's win over Eureka last week and finished with four goals in two games.
  • Jenny Howard, Webster University (Volleyball) Howard picked up a double double with 14 kills and 15 digs in her team's match against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
  • Gabriela Martin, Principia College (Women's Soccer) Martin recorded a pair of game winning goals on the week as the Panthers topped Blackburn and Westminster.
  • Kersten McDonough, Fontbonne University (Volleyball) McDonough averaged 4.75 kills per set in two matches last week for the Griffins.
  • Ian McReynolds, Webster University (Men's Soccer) McReynolds saw his scoreless streak in net extend to 279 minutes as Webster recorded a 1-0 shutout of Westminster.
  • Hollie Schultz, MacMurray College (Volleyball) Schultz recorded a double double in a win over Illinois College; finishing with 21 assists and 12 digs while adding five service aces.
  • Jordan Vehlewald, Webster University (Volleyball) Vehlewald recorded three 20 dig matches last week and moved into third place on Webster's career list.
