Principia Student-Athletes Give Back to Community
ELSAH, ILL. -- The Principia College volleyball
team and men's and women's cross country teams are working together
this week to give back to the community. ,They started out the week
with an afternoon and evening at Peace Haven Association, which is
a Christian Science Nursing Facility and visiting Christian Science
nursing service.
The two teams traveled to St. Louis, Missouri where the facility is
located and then divided into two groups. ,One group participated
in "nails for Nana" where a few of the girls painted the nails of
some of the residents. ,This year there was quite an exceptional
variety of nail polish colors for the ladies to choose from since
freshman volleyball player, Zoe Mahler, brought her deluxe set from
home! ,The ladies from Peace Haven loved the nail service and some
of them participated in a game of balloon volleyball at the
end.
The other group of volunteers headed outside to work on
landscaping. ,It was a beautiful day outside and the group made
quite a difference in the appearance of the outside of Peace Haven.
,They weeded and mulched the front beds and then also weeded and
removed lots of brush from around and on top of the garage. ,Some
students even stood up on the garage as they cut and removed the
overgrown plants on the roof.
After a short dinner break the teams returned to Peace Haven to
sign hymns to the residents as they settled into their normal
bedtime routine. ,Senior captain Jessica
Bushong commented, "Singing hymns with the members of
Peace Haven was a very touching and joy-filled experience, the
residents seemed very grateful that we came back to sing hymns...it
mean a lot to all of us."
The week of giving continues as the team volunteers more later in
the week! ,Check back for more stories on women's soccer, men's
soccer and the volleyball and cross country teams!
