AROUND THE SLIAC

The Blackburn baseball program announced the hiring of two assistant coaches for this season. Blackburn welcomes Daniel Sharp and Jonathan Harris to the team, who will be the largest roster in program in history. Sharp will serve as the Beavers pitching coach while Harris will work with hitters and catchers and serve as recruiting coordinator.

The Eureka basketball programs swept conference Player of the Week honors this week. Greg Kent was named the SLIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week after averaging 12.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 3.0 steals per game which included a triple-double. Kelsey Shoemake was named Women's Player of the Week after averaging 20.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game with two double-doubles.

The Fontbonne baseball team will host a Trivia Night with all proceeds benefitting the Griffins spring trip to Orlando, Florida. The Trivia Night will be February 7th at 7 p.m. at Lee McKinney Court on the campus of Fontbonne. Cost is just $20 per person and includes drinks. There will also be a silent auction. The Greenville men's basketball team is off to a fast start this conference season, being the only remaining undefeated team with a 4-0 record. Greenville is 7-4 overall and have won two straight games. They put their undefeated conference record on the line this week against Eureka and Webster.

It was a busy time on the campus of Iowa Wesleyan over break. The Tigers hoops teams will have a new court to call home as Iowa Wesleyan completed remodeling of Ruble Arena. To see pictures of the new home court for the Iowa Wesleyan basketball teams click HERE

The MacMurray men's basketball team has opened the New Year on the right foot. After dropping five consecutive games to close out 2014 the Highlanders have now won two straight in 2015, defeating Westminster and Iowa Wesleyan. The Highlanders are now 3-9 overall but more importantly 3-2 in the SLIAC.

Principia senior forward Karina Olsen is one of the top inside players in the SLIAC. Olsen is averaging 13.6 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, just one of four players in the SLIAC to average in double figures in both. Olsen also leads the conference in field goal percentage with a .609 mark.

Spalding women's basketball forward Kayla Styles is the only player in the SLIAC to currently rank in the top five in the conference in scoring, rebounding, steals, and blocked shots. Styles, a transfer from Xavier, is averaging 15.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.1 steals, and 2.6 blocks per game.

Webster junior guard Ashley Brooks is having success on both ends of the court this season. Brooks is averaging 12.2 points per game but also ranks fourth in the conference in assists with 41. On the defensive side Brooks has 23 steals, which is third best in the SLIAC.
Westminster guard Brandon Moore continues to be one of the conference's top shooters from long range. Moore is hitting on 51-percent of his three-point shots this season, second best in the SLIAC. Over half of his made field goals this year (28 of 55) have come from behind the arc.
