SLIAC Game of the Week: MacMurray at Fontbonne (February 17, 2015)
The end of the season is near and with that come the final pushes for postseason play. This week's SLIAC Game of the Week features two teams in the middle of the push as MacMurray looks to secure a top spot in the SLIAC Tournament and Fontbonne is looking to grab the final spot into the tournament.....MORE

SLIAC WINTER STANDINGS

AROUND THE SLIAC

Blackburn College is having a Sea of Red night at their basketball games on Wednesday as they host Eureka College. Blackburn is asking all fans and students to wear red to the game to show their support. Students wearing red may have the opportunity to participate in halftime contests for a chance at prizes.

Eureka College recently held a speaker series for student-athletes; discussing their time as a student-athlete. Speaking at the event were Tia Brooks, Dr. Katy Tran-Turner, and Jarrad Turner. The former outstanding student-athletes spent time with current student-athletes in practice, mental training, and recounting stories of obstacles they faced throughout their careers as student-athletes and as the entered the professional world.

This is a big week for the Fontbonne men's basketball team as they are attempting to get into the SLIAC Tournament. The Griffins hopes took a hit last week when they dropped a pair of games (Webster and Iowa Wesleyan) which snapped their five game winning streak. The Griffins have three games left this season and will need some help from team's above them in the standings.

The Greenville men's basketball team took one step closer to securing a spot in the SLIAC Tournament with an upset win over MacMurray last week. The Panthers are now 10-6 in conference play and are in fourth place in the standings. They finish the regular season with games against Blackburn this Saturday and Webster, who defeated Greenville earlier this year, on Tuesday.

Iowa Wesleyan junior guard Chris Fowler was named the SLIAC Player of the Week this week after helping the Tigers take down Fontbonne 69-67 in overtime. Fowler scored 30 points including the game winning points with 1:03 left in overtime. He added five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

The MacMurray men's basketball team is currently in first-place in the SLIAC standings but are still looking to secure the top overall seed in the upcoming tournament. MacMurray has three regular season games remaining on the schedule; Iowa Wesleyan, Fontbonne, and Principia. The Highlanders are 11-4 in the conference , holding a one game edge in the loss column over both Spalding and Webster.

The Principia women's basketball team was officially eliminated from postseason competition by their 58-52 loss to Greenville on Tuesday night. Principia is 10-12 this season and 5-11 in conference play. Both win totals are the highest for the program since the 2008-09 season when they went 11-14 overall and 7-9 in the conference.

Spalding's Jessica Guy recently reached the 1,000 point plateau for her career. Guy netted her 1,000th point in a 69-41 win over Webster, scoring 19 points in the game. Guy is averaging 12.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game this season.

The Gorloks men's basketball team may be peaking at the right time having won three straight games and four of their last five. Webster currently sits in third place in the standings and have two games left to position themselves for seeding in the SLIAC Tournament. Webster closes out the regular season against Eureka and Greenville, both teams battling for the final playoff spot.

After a slow start to the season the Blue Jays women's basketball team has taken flight during the New Year, winning 13 of 15 games. The Blue Jays are 16-6 overall and 13-3 in the SLIAC. With just two games remaining the Blue Jays have secured the second seed in the upcoming SLIAC Tournament. They close out the regular season against Fontbonne and Spalding.
