SLIAC Weekly Release - March 11

Golden Eagles Grounded at Wash U, 75-64 (March 6, 2015)

Spalding Falls to Emory in NCAA First Round, 88-59 (March 6, 2015)
The Spalding men's basketball team's season came to an end Friday night, as they fell to 11th ranked Emory, 88-59 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles finish their season with an 18-10 record.....MORE

MacMurray Takes Winter Canned Food Drive Title (March 10, 2015)
For the second straight sport season MacMurray College has claimed the SLIAC/SAAC Canned Food Drive title. MacMurray edged out Iowa Wesleyan College during the winter season collecting 634 cans of food during collections before and after men's and women's basketball games.....MORE

AROUND THE SLIAC

Blackburn opened up the 2015 season with a series in Jackson, Mississippi where they faced Illinois Wesleyan. The series was originally set for a three game series but the final game was canceled due to rain. The Beavers dropped both games of the series, falling in game one 7-5 and game two 10-0. The Beavers took the early lead in game one, jumping out to a 4-0 lead but were unable to hold on to the lead. Next up for the Beavers is a three game series against Loyola (La.).

The Eureka volleyball team visited Maple Lawn Nursing Home this week, assisting with the start of their spring training. Four Red Devil student-athletes visited the home, helping the grounds crew pick up sticks and clean up the grounds. Maple Lawn Homes, Inc. is a nonprofit Christian retirement community founded in 1922 and sponsored by the Mennonite Church. With the help of 250 volunteers, the 140 employees assist more than 1500 individuals each year from the community.

The Fontbonne softball team is off to a quick 4-0 start this season. The Griffins started the season in an exciting fashion with a 9-8 win in 10 innings over Moravian. Cassie Glixman hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and then the Griffins stole the win, literally, when Courtney Kedroski stole home in the bottom of the tenth.

The Greenville softball team split their season opening double header against Freed-Hardeman. The Panthers fell in game one 9-1 but rebounded with a 6-5 win in game two. Hannah Burger recorded the win, going seven innings. The Panthers pounded out nine hits in the game with Bryn McKie leading the attack with three hits and two runs batted in.

The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team is off to a hot start this season, winning their first three games. The Tigers defeated Stockton 15-5 and followed with a sweep of Cazenovia, winning 5-4 and 14-10. The Tigers have eight hitters with a .300 or better average with seven players picking up an RBI already. The Tigers are headed to Auburndale, Florida this week where theyare set to face Pittsburgh-Greensburg, Mount St. Joseph, and Principia.

MacMurray is off to a 1-2 start to the 2015 season, winning their season opening 8-0 over Delaware Valley. The Highlanders knocked out 11 hits in the win with six players picking up a hit including five players with multiple hits. Stephanie Watkins finished with four runs batted in, with a pair of triples. Jaimey Watrous notched the win, going six innings and allowing five hits while striking out five.

The Principia women's tennis team won their first two matches of the season, 9-1 over Missouri Baptist and 9-0 over Stephens. The Panthers then fell in a pair of matches against Calvin and Wheaton and are now traveling California during their spring break. The Panthers are set to face Occidental, Cal Tech, Hardin-Simmons, Biola, and Cal Lutheran during their West Coat swing.

The Spalding baseball team finally opened their 2015 season, picking up a 9-5 win over Hanover. The Golden Eagles fell behind 5-0 after two innings before rallying. Spalding plated four runs in both the third and fourth innings with Ryan Mosby and Blake Patterson hitting home runs during the rally. Mosby, Brad Speek, and Drew Beckman led Spalding with two hits.

The Webster softball team has escaped the snow on the ground, playing games in Mississippi and Florida. With the warm weather Webster has been able to play 11 games already this season. The Gorloks have picked up a 12-4 win over Huntingdon and 8-6 win over Transylvania.

The Westminster baseball team won a three game series against Nebraska Wesleyan. The Blue Jays took the first two games of the series, winning 9-3 and 15-2. Tim Chambliss is on a tear, hitting .538 with five runs batted in while Connor Hager is off to a .545 start with one home run and five RBI. Deion Hughes and Will Miller notched wins for the Blue Jay pitching staff.
