AROUND THE SLIAC

Blackburn outfielder Matt Mokriakow has been a bright spot for the Beavers this spring, hitting .457 and leading the SLIAC in batting average. In conference play he has hit even better, with a .545 batting average. On the year he has three home runs and 22 runs batted in with six stolen bases and 20 runs scored.
Eureka College will hold its annual fund rasiging golf event on June 26 this summer at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington, Ill. There will be a 1 p.m. shotgun start with a dinner and silent auction following golf. The entry fee is $125 and includes 18 holes with a cart, golf balls, unique tee prizes, lunch, and dinner. Individual and team prizes will be available for the lowest team score, longest drive, closest to the pin, and longest putt. To register visit the Eureka athletics website.
Fontbonne sophomore Becca Buehler was named the SLIAC Women's Track and Field Player of the Week. Buehler had a record setting performance at the SLU Invite, finishing third in the 400 meter hurdles, and breaking her own school record with a time of 66.08 seconds. The time ranks her 56th in Division III qualifying this season.
The Greenville men's tennis team had a nine match winning streak snapped with a 5-4 loss to Spring Arbor. The Panthers dropped all three doubles matches but rallied to win four of six singles matches, although in the end they came up just short. The Panthers are now 12-4 overall this spring and 3-1 in SLIAC action.

Iowa Wesleyan College will hold their annual golf event on June 12 at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa. Contests will be held at several different holes throughout the course and will include hole in one, longest drive, longest putt, and closest to the pin.  A cocktail reception will take place after the completion of play, and raffle drawings will be held at that time. Registration for the event is now available at http://www.iwctigers.com/f/golfouting.php

MacMurray junior Taylor Hewitt was named the SLIAC Softball Hitter of the Week after helping the Highlanders go 3-1 on the week. Hewitt hit .615 with nine runs batted in and a 1.077 slugging percentage over four games. She started the week with two hits and four RBI in a win over Iowa Wesleyan and followed two more hits and three RBI in game two. She followed with four hits in a double header against Webster including three hits in game one.
The Principia men's tennis team come up big on senior day, defeating Greenville College 7-2 and clinching the top seed in the upcoming 2015 SLIAC Men's Tennis Tournament. The Panthers honored seniors Jason Wissman, Nate Waters, Andrew Rohrer, and Vernon West in their final home match. Principia is now 6-5 overall and 4-0 in the SLIAC this spring.

The Golden Eagle baseball team has made a slow climb to the top spot in the SLIAC East Division. Spalding is currently 16-9 overall and 9-4 in SLIAC play. They have won seven straight games and face Earlham in a non-conference game this week before returning to SLIAC action. They host MacMurray in a three game series over Saturday and Sunday.

The Webster baseball team is on a roll, winning their 11th consecutive game after a 6-5 win over Washington U on Tuesday. The Gorloks used some late inning magic to pick up the win. Trailing 5-3 with bases loaded and one out Chris Jansen came on in relief and struck out two batters to end the Wash U rally. Then down 5-3 in the eighth Webster's Jeff Kammer hit a two run home run to even the score up. The Gorloks won the game on an RBI double by Matt Wollnik in the ninth inning.
The Blue Jay baseball team had a big weekend, sweeping Fontbonne in a three game series and handing the Griffins their first conference losses of the year. The Blue Jays won 6-4, 12-6, and 11-5 and return to action with a double header against Blackburn and a three game series against Iowa Wesleyan this week. Westminster is currently 12-8 overall and 7-4 in the SLIAC, sitting in third place in the SLIAC West Division.
