Mummert Named Blackburn Athletic Director

Blackburn College has announced that the institution has hired Vernon Mummert, a longtime higher education athletics administrator, as its new Athletic Director. He will oversee the operations of eleven intercollegiate sports teams at Blackburn.

He brings a wealth of experience in athletics administration with most recently holding the position of Athletics Director at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Arizona  His experience includes having worked the past 24 years at the NCAA Division III, NAIA Division I, and NJCAA Division I levels.

Prior to the SCC position, he served as Director of Athletics & Recreation at the College of Staten Island, which is part of The City University of New York (CUNY) system. During his three-year tenure, he also served as president and vice president of CUNY's Athletic Conference. 

Other athletic administrative positions he has held include Athletic Director//HPER at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., from 1994 to 1998 followed by a 10-year stay as Athletic Director at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. While there, he was honored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics with the NCAA Division III Central Regional Athletic Director of the Year award.

"I am honored to have been selected as Blackburn College's Athletic Director to open up the 2015- 16 academic year," said Mummert, who began his duties on July 1.  "I want to thank President John Comerford and Dean of Students Heidi Heinz for giving me the opportunity to enhance the Blackburn athletic culture and student-athlete experience.  I look forward to mentoring an outstanding athletic staff to raise the competitive level of Blackburn athletics. I intend to raise the bar of student athlete recruitment for all of our teams to enhance performance records both in the athletic and academic arenas to promote student athlete success and higher retention rates for the college," added Mummert.

Mummert began his collegiate career in 1977 at Drew University, where he served for 17 years, starting as the soccer and tennis coach and eventually becoming Athletic Director. His soccer teams amassed more than 275 wins and three conference championships.

I believe that for Blackburn Athletics "the best is yet to come " and I'm most definitely in it to win it," said Mummert.

Mummert received both his Master of Education in Administration and Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland.

A native of Baltimore, Md., he and his wife Susan have three adult children.
