SLIAC Players of the Week - September 14

This week's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week are: Raul Belman, James Bowen, Brooke Goodyear, Sophia Hathaway, Jourdin McFarland, Sierra Sprague, Meghan Sykora, and Shane Witters-Hicks.

 

SLIAC MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
SHANE WITTERS-HICKS - PRINCIPIA COLLEGE

Witters-Hicks, a junior from Golden, Colo., made his 8k race debut this past weekend, placing 6th in a field of 140 runners at the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College. Witters-Hicks completed the newly designed course in a time of 26:23, dropping nearly a minute off his 2014 best time. This marks the first time he has placed in the top ten at the event. 

 

SLIAC WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
BROOKE GOODYEAR - GREENVILLE COLLEGE

Goodyear, a sophomore from Morton, Ill., captured a top ten finish in the Midwest Classic XC Invite in Bourbonais, Ill. last weekend. Goodyear finished the 5k race with a time of 20:02, with a 4:00 mile pace. Goodyear over came a soggy course to grab a top ten spot out of a field of 98 runners.

 

SLIAC MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK (OFFENSIVE)
JAMES BOWEN - EUREKA COLLEGE

Bowen, a freshman from Homer Glen, Ill., picked up SLIAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the week honors after helping his team extend their winning streak to three games to open the season. Bowen played a role in four of his team's five goals on the week. In a 2-1 win over conference foe Iowa Wesleyan, Bowen netted one goal. He followed with two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist in a 3-2 win over Rockford. On the week Bowen finished with three goals and one assist for seven points while putting eight of his 12 shots on net.

SLIAC MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK (DEFENSIVE)
RAUL BELMAN - WESTMINSTER COLLEGE

Belman, a junior from Celaya, Mexico, tallied a blank sheet in his only appearance in net last week, a 1-0 win over Ozarks (Ark.). Belman made six saves in the shutout win and lowered his league leading goals-against average to a 1.00 mark on the season.

 

 

SLIAC WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK (OFFENSIVE)
MEGHAN SYKORA - BLACKBURN COLLEGE

Sykora, a sophomore from Arnold, Mo., helped the Beavers pick up their first three wins of the year last week as she recorded four goals and three assists in three games. Sykora started the week with two goals in a win over Rockford. She followed with two more goals and added two assists in a 6-0 win over Mount Mary and closed out the week with an assist on the only goal of the game in a win over Wisconsin-Lutheran.

JOURDIN McFARLAND - BLACKBURN COLLEGE

McFarland, a junior from Carlinville, Ill., was busy in net last week as she tallied three wins including two shutouts. The only goal allowed by McFarland on the week came in a 6-1 win over Rockford, in which she made six saves. McFarland blanked Mount Mary, making two saves, and then threw up another shutout with 11 saves in a win over Wisconsin-Lutheran. On the week McFarland stopped 19 of 20 shots faced, allowing just one goal, while playing in 270 minutes.

SLIAC VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK (OFFENSIVE)
SOPHIA HATHAWAY - PRINCIPIA COLLEGE

Hathaway, a freshman from South Pasadena, Calif., was active on the court last week in her three matches. Hathaway picked up a triple double in a win over Spalding, finishing with 16 kills, 13 assists, and 10 digs while hitting .419 in the match. She finished with another 16 kills against Lincoln Christian, also tallying four blocks and hitting .382 in the match. Hathway averaged 3.25 kills per set on the week while hitting .318 and added 2.75 assists and 0.5 blocks per set.

SLIAC VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK (DEFENSIVE)
SIERRA SPRAGUE - PRINCIPIA COLLEGE

Sprague, a senior from Elsah, Ill., put together three straight 20 dig performances last week. In three matches, 12 total sets, Sprague recorded 60 digs. She also added six service aces on the week and finished with a team high 11 kills in a win over Blackburn. Sprague currently leads the SLIAC in digs per set this season at 4.75 per set.

  • Julio De Leon, Spalding University (Men's Soccer) De Leon recored a goal and an assist as he helped his team take down #23 ranked Emory 3-1 at home on Saturday.
  • Riley Flynn, Webster University (Men's Cross Country) Flynn set a new program record in the 5k with a time of 17:14 at the Forest Park XC Festival.
  • Morgan Hauser, MacMurray College (Volleyball) Hauser picked up a double double with 10 kills and 10 digs against Coe, earning All-Tournament honors.
  • Hannah Marshall, Westminster College (Volleyball) Marshall finished with 19 kills and eight digs in a 3-1 win over Iowa Wesleyan last week.
  • Chelsea Noser, Webster University (Women's Soccer) Noser netted both of Webster's goals in a 2-1 win over #14 ranked Lake Forest.
  • Corey Redington, Webster University (Men's Soccer) Redington, a freshman, netted his first collegiate goals in fashion as he tallied the game-tying goal with just 53-seconds left in the game against Ozarks (Ark.). He added a second goal in the game when he scored the game-winner with 3:26 left in overtime.
  • Andrew Sharp, Greenville College (Men's Cross Country) Sharp placed 4th at the Midwest Classic, finishing the 8k race with a time of 26:48.
