AROUND THE SLIAC

The Blackburn men's basketball team is on a two game winning streak after defeating Spalding and Fontbonne last week. The Beavers topped Spalding 67-64 behind 16 points from Jake Maestranzi and 14 points from Chris Davis. Blackburn followed with another nail biter, topping Fontbonne 80-77. Five different Beavers scored in double figures with DeAndre Manuel leading the way with 17 points.
Sam Feehan was named the SLIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week last week after averaging 25.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.0 steals over two games. Feehan had a high of 33 points in his team's game against Greenville. He shot 13-of-17 from the field in the game, including going perfect from three-point range and the free-throw line. He followed with 18 points and six assists in a win against Principia.
Fontbonne men's basketball senior Jared Greenlee joined the 1,000 point club last weekend against Blackburn College. Greenlee finished with 15 points in the game and now has 1,014 career points; becoming the 15th Griffin to join the 1,000 point club and the first since 2010. Greenlee is averaging 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season.
The Panthers men's basketball team had their four game winning streak snapped last Saturday when they lost at the buzzer to Webster, 108-106. After going just 1-8 to open the season, Greenville has won five of their last eight and are now 6-11 overall and 5-5 in the SLIAC. They will host Westminster on Wednesday night before traveling to Blackburn on Saturday.

Georgetta Lewis, a former women's soccer player from Iowa Wesleyan, is a finalist in the 2015 CONCACAF awards. Lewis is just one of two females coaching a men's soccer team in her home country of Antigua and is a finalist for Female Coach of the Year. Lewis was a member of the Tiger soccer program from 2005 until 2006 and is a former Antigua national player. She currently serves as head coach of Urlings FC.

The MacMurray women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season with a 63-60 victory over Fontbonne last week. The Highlanders used an 18-10 advantage in the second quarter to take control of the game and closed out the game with 25 points in the final quarter. Brianna Markusic led MacMurray with 19 points off the bench, adding six rebounds. Liz Kruemmelbein chipped in nine points, 10 rebounds, and five steals.
Principia junior forward Adaku Anumu is currently averaging 25.7 points per game this season. That is fifth best in NCAA Division III this season and would be the second highest average by a SLIAC player in conference history behind only Jeff Reis' (Webster) 27.9 points per game in 2000-01. Anumu has topped 30 points six times this season including two games with more than 40 points.

The Spalding women's basketball team had their four game winning streak snapped in a 58-55 loss to Westminster last Saturday. The Golden Eagles are now 12-5 overall and 6-4 in conference play. Spalding heads out to face Eureka on Wednesday night and will then host Fontbonne on Saturday. The Golden Eagles defeated both teams in their first meetings this season.

The Webster men's basketball team has won two in a row to even their overall record to 9-9 while improving to 6-5 in conference play. The Gorloks edged out Greenville last Saturday and Principia on Tuesday night. They will now face Eureka on Saturday afternoon in the SLIAC Game of the Week. Webster is currently one game back in the win column for first-place in the SLIAC standings.
The Westminster women's basketball continued their hot streak with two more wins last week, topping Principia and Spalding. The Blue Jays have now won six straight and will face another hot team in Greenville (8-2 in last ten games) on Wednesday. Westminster is currently 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the SLIAC, tied with Greenville for second place in the SLIAC standings.
