AROUND THE SLIAC

The Blackburn men's soccer team notched their first home win of the 2015 season on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Lincoln Christian. The Beavers took control of the game early, out shooting their foe 12-5 in the first-half and taking a 1-0 lead into the break. The Beavers added two more goals in the second-half and totaled 24 shots in the game. Steven Njuba netted two goals while Nate Kinnison added two assists.
The Red Devil men's soccer team continued their hot start with a 6-0 win over St. Louis Christian College on Tuesday. The Red Devils jumped on top early when Brady Thomas scored just 26-seconds into the game. Thomas would add another goal in the first-half while Tim Johnson, James Bowen, Kyle Shanahan, and Andrew Maestre got into the scoring fun as well. Eureka is off to their best start in school history and have won four of their first five games this season.
It was a good week for Fontbonne athletics, with three student-athletes capturing conference Player of the Week honors. Olivia Beggs won the award in Women's Cross Country after competing in the National Catholic Championships and setting a personal best time. Kersten McDonough was named the Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 4.4 kills per set while Maddie Stadler was named Defensive Player of the Week after recording 94 digs in four matches last week.
Ian Hodge's standout performance on the field last week led to a pair of weekly honors. Hodge, a junior goalkeeper, was named the SLIAC Defensive Player of the Week after picking up two wins in three outings, including two shutouts. On the week he totaled 14 saves with an .875 save percentage. In addition to his conference honor Hodge was named the NCCAA Division I Men's Soccer Defenisve Student-Athlete of the Week.

After an early season conference game against Eureka, which they played a scoreless 0-0 tie, the Iowa Wesleyan women's soccer team returns to conference action this Saturday with a game against Greenville. Iowa Wesleyan will host Greenville at 3 p.m. and will conclude their weekly schedule on Sunday with a contest at Rockford. Iowa Wesleyan is currently 0-4-1 overall this season.

MacMurray volleyball will be stepping out of conference play looking to end their three match losing streak. The Highlanders are 7-6 overall and will face Knox and Robert Morris-Springfield in non-conference action this week before returning to SLIAC play against Fontbonne, Spalding, and Eureka this weekend. Morgan Hauser is currently second in the league in kills at 3.49 per set.
The Principia women's soccer team will open up conference action this weekend against a familiar team, Webster University. The two last faced each other in the SLIAC Championship game last fall. Principia is currently 2-5 overall and will be looking to stop a three game losing streak.

After starting the year with seven straight losses the Spalding volleyball team appears to have turned things around having won four of their last six matches. That record includes a 4-2 mark in conference play. Jessica Diehl currently leads the SLIAC in hitting percentage with a .336 mark while Erin Downs ranks second in the league in total blocks with 41.

The Webster University women's soccer team swept weekly honors as Gaby Medrano was named Offensive Player of the Week and Alisa Coralic was named Defensive Player of the Week. Medrano sparked her team's 3-2 come from behind win over North Central, tallying a goal and an assist. Coralic made three second-half shots in the win to end North Central's five game winning streak.
Westminster junior Tripp Sheehan picked up SLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after helping his team extend their winning streak to six games. Sheehan assisted on five of his team's goals on the week, including setting up a pair of game-winning goals. Sheehan currently leads the SLIAC in assists with six this season.
