AROUND THE SLIAC

Recently six members of the Blackburn College Women's Basketball Team spent part of their day cleaning up parts of Beaver Dam State Park south of Carlinville.  Team members Candace Pollock, Aleisha Stiltner, Gariel Pierce, Elizabeth Johnston, Rachel Scheirer, and Angela Andrews participated as part of a community service initiative by the Blackburn College Athletic Department.
It is never too early to start thinking about the spring. Eureka College will host the first annual Maroon and Gold Fall World Series this Friday with four other game dates set as well. The games will be open to the public and free of charge. The game Saturday is part of the Homecoming activities for the weekend and off a chance for fans to get a first look at the Red Devil baseball team.
The Fontbonne University softball team is holding their annual Mouse Race this Saturday, October 10th in the campus gymnasium. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and beverages are included with purchase of $25 ticket. You may bring your own food however no alcohol is permitted to be brought onto campus. The Greenville athletic program picked up two SLIAC Player of the Week awards last week. Savannah Sells was named the Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week while Tymber Gabbert was named Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Sells led the Panthers to a 3-1 win over Webster, leading the way with 13 kills and adding six digs and four total blocks. Gabbert anchored a Panther defense that recorded back to back shutouts, allowing just eight total shots over 200 minutes of action.

Iowa Wesleyan's Cierra Howard was named the SLIAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week after recorded four consecutive matches of at least 20 digs last week. Howard averaged 7.07 digs per set on the week and currently leads the conference in digs. On the heels of the award the Tiger volleyball team also notched a 3-2 win over Knox on Tuesday night in which Lexa Mahr recorded 17 kills and 19 digs.

The Highlander volleyball team evened their season record to 10-10 this year with a 3-0 win over Iowa Wesleyan last weekend. The Highlanders were led by Morgan Hauser with 14 kills while Alexa Boyer finished with 32 assists and Alycia Ferrari added 17 digs. The Highlanders return to action with three matches this week as they host Eureka and then face Greenville and Blackburn in a neutral site series in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
Principia's Clarice Bruch was named the SLIAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Panthers to a win over Eureka and tie against Spalding. Bruch netted one goal against Eureka and followed by scoring both of her team's goals in a 2-2 tie against Spalding.

Brandon Price appears ready for a strong kick to the end of the season, placing 6th in Greater Louisville Classic last weekend and helping his team to a 5th place finish. Price completed the 8K course in a time of 26:04, garnering his 6th place finish out of 348 runners. For his efforts Price earned SLIAC Men's Cross Country Player of the Week honors.

Webster athletics captured a pair of SLIAC Player of the Week awards this week as Valerie Martin was named Women's Cross Country Player of the Week and Austin Pierce was named Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Martin set a career best time of 19:30, finishing 20th out of 365 runners in the Greater Louisville Classic. Pierce rallied his team with two goals in a 3-2 win over Eureka including the game winner.
The fall teams are on a streak in Fulton. The Westminster men's soccer team is on a nine game winning streak and are now 9-1 overall. The women's soccer team has won three in a row to improve to 5-4-1 overall. The volleyball squad has won seven straight and are currently 13-5 overall.
