SLIAC Game of the Week: Webster at Westminster

 

At a Glance

This week's SLIAC Game of the Week will be Wednesday night when Webster University heads to Westminster College in a rematch of last year's SLIAC Women's Soccer Championship game. The game will be held in Fulton, Mo. with game time set for 5 p.m.
 

About the Webster University "GOROLOKS"

Webster is currently 4-6 overall this season and are one of just three teams undefeated in conference play with a 2-0 record. The Gorloks are coming off a win over Iowa Wesleyan last Saturday and have won three of their last four games. Webster has shown a balanced game this season, holding in the middle of the pack in both goals scored and goals allowed. The Gorloks have scored 22 goals this season while allowing 15.

Their balanced offensive attack was demonstrated to perfection in their last game when 12 different players netted a goal in their 12-0 win over Iowa Wesleyan. Freshman Melissa Kasper leads the team with three goals and eight points while 2015 All-Conference forward Chelsea Noser is tied for the team lead with three goals including two game winners. In net Webster has used a rotation of four keepers with each over 180 minutes of time. Sophomore Alisa Coralic has seen the most action, over 300 minutes, while recording a 2.29 goals-against average with 20 saves.
 

About the Westminster College "BLUE JAYS"

Westminster brings a 3-5 overall record into the game with a 1-1 mark in SLIAC play. The Blue Jays are coming off a 1-0 double overtime loss to Spalding on Sunday, which ended their two game winning streak. Westminster is a defensive minded team, allowing just 13 goals in their eight games this season. However the Blue Jays have struggled to get their attack going, netting just 10 goals.

Sophomore Gracie Koonce leads the team with two goals and four assists for eight points this season. Junior Payton Beeler and Paige Townsend, as well as junior Adrienne Ebersole, have each also notched two goals this year. The Blue Jay back line is once again anchored by junior Abby Rockers, the two-time SLIAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. In goal four year starter Ellen Woolsey holds a 1.14 goals-against average with 15 saves in over 300-minutes of action while freshman Sarah Cradick has come in to play over 400 minutes in net and make 24 saves with a 1.94 goals-against average.

Game Notes

  • Webster leads the all-time series against Westminster 24-0-1, with last year's meeting in the SLIAC Championship ending in a tie and Westminster advancing on penalty kicks.
  • During conference play Webster is putting a conference high 30-percent of their shots on goal, more than 20-percentage points better than the closest team.
  • It was this time last year that Westminster started to put it together. They entered October 2015 with a 3-4-1 record before going 6-2 in the final month.
  • Did You Know: Webster has gone 42-3 over the last six years during SLIAC regular season play and have not lost more than one conference game since the 2010 season.
  • Did You Know: Westminster became just the fourth current SLIAC member to win the SLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament; joining Fontbonne, Principia, and Webster. Maryville also won the title prior to making the move to Division II.
