Spalding Softball And Basketball Put A Wrap On Giving Back

The Spalding University women's basketball and softball teams each participated in gift wrapping events over the weekend. The women's basketball team paired with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kentuckian while the softball team visited the KEASP Family Scholar House.

Spalding Women's Basketball Head Coach Charlie Just and 15 student-athletes volunteered their time at the Ed Endres Boys & Girls Club in New Alabany, Ind.; helping wrap presents for the nearly 3,000 kids in Louisville and Southern Indiana that the organization serves.

"Wrapping presents at the Boys and Girls Club has proven to be one of the more rewarding experiences with the team," said senior Julie Skaggs. "It really puts into perspective the meaning of the season and how important giving to others can be. Being able to help create a better Christmas for the boys and girls around the area is a wonderful feeling and we look forward to doing it every year."

Before heading to the KEASP Family Scholar House, the Golden Eagles softball team visited local stores to help check off a wish list for two of the Family Scholar House families; buying essential needs such as winter coats. The Family Scholar House provides numerous services to help empower families to succeed in education; offering financial aid, advising, and scholarship information as well as parenting classes, help in applying for welfare, and teaching life skills.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to participate in this event to give back to the community," said junior infielder Brook Lamon. "It allowed us to shop and provide presents for families in need, as well as an opportunity to bond and become closer as a team."

The softball team also participated in a walk at Churchill Downs this past October in support of JDRF, an organization dedicated to raising funds for type 1 diabetes. The team walked in support of Team Sam Klein, helping raise over $1,000. Sam Klein is a junior on the Spalding University softball team, and has been battling T1D since she was 14 years old.
