AROUND THE SLIAC

Despite falling just short of making the SLIAC Tournament the Blackburn men's basketball team still has several positives to look upon this year. They finished the season with 12 overall wins, their most since winning 14 in the 2005-06 season. Also for the second straight season the Beavers finished with a 9-9 conference record, marking the first time in over a decade that they have put together back to back non-losing records in conference play.
The Eureka Red Devils women's basketball team earned the program's first ever outright SLIAC regular season title this season, going 14-2 in conference play. The Red Devils secured the title with a 99-75 win over Westminster, marking the school's first conference title in a women's sport since 1997. The Red Devils will now play host to the 2017 SLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament this weekend and will face #4 seed Fontbonne University in the opening round on Thursday.
Fontbonne University announced their 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame Class and it includes a pair of former spring student-athletes. Joining the Griffins Hall of Fame will be former baseball player Josh Burlison and former softball player Ashley (Weaver) Withers. The pair will be inducted at Fontbonne's annual athletics banquet on Sunday, May 7. For the full news release on the Fontbonne Hall of Fame class click HERE
For just the second time in program history the Panthers men's basketball team won the SLIAC regular season title outright. The Panthers are 20-5 overall this season and finished 14-4 in SLIAC play. They will now host the SLIAC Tournament for the first time, they were not eligible for the conference tournament during their previous regular season championship. The Panthers will face #4 seed Principia College on Friday at 8 p.m.

The Iowa Wesleyan men's basketball team is headed to the post-season after receiving the #7 seed in the 2017 United States Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament. The Tigers are 17-8 overall and will face #2 seed Concordia-Alabama. The national tournament will take place in Uniontown, Penn. from March 1-4 and is hosted by Penn State-Fayette. It was a rare late season non-conference game for the MacMurray College men's basketball team on Monday night. The Highlanders defeated Robert Morris 98-68, pulling away with 52 point in the second-half. MacMurray shot 59-percent from the field in the game while holding their opponent to just 35-percent. Brent Long led the way with 37 point and 10 rebounds while Derek Bourke added 16 points and Marshall Corbin finished with 10 points.

Welcome Back! The Principia men's basketball team is making a return to the SLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2006. The Panthers finished the regular season by winning an improbable seven of their last eight games, clinching the final spot into the tournament. They are 12-11 overall this season and will be the #4 seed in the upcoming tournament where they will face host Greenville at 8 p.m. on Friday. Principia went 1-1 against Greenville this season with a 117-101 win over Greenville just two weeks ago.

Believe it or not but baseball season is here and the Spalding nine opened up their 2017 season last weekend by going 2-1. The Golden Eagles split a double header with North Park, including pounding out 16 runs in the season opener, and then defeated Hendrix 7-5 to close out the weekend. They continue with another three games this weekend as they face Penn State Behrend in a three games series.

Webster junior forward Aley Lucas was named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the last week of the 2016-17 regular season. Lucas averaged 13.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game last week while helping the Gorloks secure the #3 seed in the upcoming SLIAC Tournament. Lucas and the Gorloks will face defending tournament champion #2 seed Greenville College at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Westminster College announced the hiring of Natalia Koryzna as the new head coach of the Blue Jays volleyball program. Koryzna most recently served as the head coach at Battle High School and has previously worked with the Volleyball Pro Academy and USA Volleyball.
