AROUND THE SLIAC

The Blackburn men's cross country team had a strong showing over the weekend at the Illinois College Invitational. The Beavers placed fourth out of eight teams in the field, registering 133 points. Tim Lacy led the way for the Beavers with a 10th place finish while Zach Felkel finished 21st. The Beavers will have two weeks off before competing in the 2016 SLIAC Cross Country Championship on October 29th in Louisville, Ky.

Eureka College will once again begin their basketball season with a Midnight Madness event. This year the Red Devil women will tip off at midnight on November 19th against Robert Morris-Peoria. After a 12 hour break the basketballs will be bouncing again when Eureka hosts Rockford University for a men's and women's doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
The Fontbonne women's soccer team climbed into the NSCAA Central Region poll this week with a #10 ranking. The Griffins are 10-5-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play. They have recorded a shutout in eight of their ten wins this season and are riding a four game winning streak. This marks just the second time in program history the Griffins have achieved a regional ranking. The only other time occurred on October 21, 2014.
Greenville's Allyson Mitchell surpassed a milestone last week when she recorded her 1,000th career kill. Mitchell, a junior, reached the momentous occasion in her match against Iowa Wesleyan. Mitchell is just the fifth player in program history to reach the mark during head coach Tom Ackerman's tenure. Mitchell currently leads the conference in kills per set this season and has 325 total kills.

The Iowa Wesleyan volleyball team is set for a busy week and a half. The Tigers will host Spalding and Wisconsin-Platteville this Saturday and Westminster on Wednesday. They will then head to Rock Island, Illinois on Oct. 28-29 to play four matches in the Augustana Tournament. Iowa Wesleyan is currently 6-17 overall and 5-9 in SLIAC play and are looking to snap their six match losing streak.

The MacMurray volleyball team had a strong weekend while playing a pair of matches at Fontbonne University. The Highlanders rallied from down two sets to pick up a 3-2 win over Eureka. Emily Lascody led the come from behind win by starting the third set off with three consecutive aces and finished the match with seven total. Olivia Wall led the way with 18 kills. The win was the second straight for the Highlanders, who defeated St. Louis College of Pharmacy the night before and was their third conference victory this year.

The Principia men's soccer team picked up a thrilling 3-2 win over MacMurray on Tuesday night for their second win in three games. The Panthers scored early when Jordan Jones netted a goal just 10-minutes into the game. Aaron Marczi scored in the 50-minute mark and Jones tacked on a second goal, the game-winner, at the 56-minute mark. Devin McLeod-Warrick made four saves in picking up the win for the Panthers.
Spalding senior outside hitter Victoria Heitzman earned her 1,00th career kill in her team's 3-0 sweep of Blackburn earlier this week. Heitzman is just the second Golden Eagle in program history to reach the mark and is the first player to do so since Spalding joined the NCAA in 2012. Heitzman is averaging 2.8 kills per set and hitting .218 this season.
The Gorlok women's cross country team had what could be deemed as the best team performance in program history. Competing at the Evansville Invitational the Gorloks top-five runners collectively ran faster than any previous quintet in school history. The five runners averaged 20:36 on the 5,000 meter course with each runner finishing in under 22 minutes. They were paced by Holly Goergen's 19:50 with Goergen picking up SLIAC Women's Cross Country Player of the Week honors this week.
Westminster's Amy Greene picked up SLIAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors after helping the Blue Jay defense pick up back to back shutout wins last week. Greene played a key role in a defense that allowed just four shots, including none on goal, in wins over Greenville and Iowa Wesleyan. In fact the Blue Jays have now won their last three games, all shutouts. They return to action this week with games against Illinois College and Blackburn College.
