SLIAC Game of the Week: Fontbonne at Webster

This week's SLIAC Game of the Week is The Battle Of Big Bend when Fontbonne University and Webster University meet on the court in a women's basketball contest. Cross-town rivals Fontbonne and Webster are two of the original charter members of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and have met 58 times on the basketball court. This week's meeting will be held at Grant Gymnasium on the Webster University campus, with tipoff at 1 p.m.

Fontbonne University 'GRIFFINS'

Fontbonne will enter the weekend with a 5-3 overall record and are tied for first in the SLIAC standings after winning their first two conference games. The Griffins are coming off conference wins over Spalding and Blackburn last week, marking the first time the program has won their first two conference games of a season since 2011-12. 

Fontbonne is averaging 69.6 points per game, shooting 41-percent as a team. Paige Black, the defending SLIAC Player of the Week, leads the team in scoring this season at 13.9 points per game. The junior guard has topped 20 points three times already this season including a high of 23 against Spalding. Black also leads the team in assists and steals. Last year's SLIAC Newcomer of the Year Raven Venegas is the inside force, averaging 9.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while shooting 48-percent from the field.

        

Webster University 'GORLOKS'

Webster starts the week with a 2-2 overall record and a 0-1 record in conference play. The Gorloks will host Finlandia on Tuesday night before returning to conference play this weekend. After winning their first two games of the season the Gorloks have dropped two straight, including a tough 77-72 overtime loss to Westminster last week.

The Gorloks are averaging 74.5 points per game this season and lead the conference with 19.8 free-throws made per game. Senior forward Aley Lucas is averaging 14.8 points per game this season while her sister Taylor is second on the team at 12.7 points per game and leads the team with 6.0 rebounds per game and 4.0 assists per game. The Gorloks' high-pressure defense has resulted in five different players averaging two or more steals per game.

 

Looking At Last Year
The two teams split the season series last year with each team winning their game at home; Fontbonne winning 56-52 as Katie Sportsman led the Griffins with 14 points off the bench and then Webster winning 83-58 as Taylor Lucas scored a game-high 16 points.

  • Last year marked the first time that both Fontbonne and Webster made the SLIAC Tournament since the 2012 tournament.
  • Fontbonne is allowing a conference-low 60.0 points per game this season.

  • Saturday's game will feature two of the top all-around players in the conference; Fontbonne's Paige Black and Webster's Taylor Lucas. Both players rank in the top ten in the conference in scoring average, assists per game, and steals per game; the only two players to accomplish that this season.
