SLIAC Players of the Week - March 12

This week's SLIAC Players of the Week include a pair of Fontbonne baseball players, a duo of softball players from Webster University, and fellow Gorlok Riley Muren.

 

SLIAC/DIAMOND SPORTS BASEBALL HITTER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 12

Jackson Penrod, Fontbonne University

Jackson Penrod, a junior, helped the Griffins to three wins last week; buoying the offense which exploded for 36 runs in four games including a pair of double-digit run games. Penrod hit .667 on the week with three runs batted in, crossing the plate five times. He finished 12-of-18 with the bat and held an on-base percentage of .700 on the week. Penrod tallied multiple hits in all four games, extending his hitting streak to six games, and was 5-for-5 in a win over Montclair State. 

   

SLIAC/DIAMOND SPORTS BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 12

Brett Lange, Fontbonne University

Lange continues to be the Griffins man coming out of the bullpen. Making two more appearances last week Lange added a win in 4 1/3 scoreless innings against Aurora. Coming in during the first inning with a five-run deficit Lange limited Aurora to just two hits and no runs while striking out five to allow the Griffins to mount a come back win. Lange worked another two innings of relief in his team's win over Montclair State. He allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four. On the week he finished with a 1.42 earned-run average and nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. 

 

SLIAC SOFTBALL HITTER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 12

Brienna Sheperd, Webster University

Sheperd, a junior from Central Point, Ore., led the Gorlok offense by hitting .474 with a home run and five runs batted in last week during six games. Sheperd had four multi-hit games, finishing the week 9-of-19 at the plate. She closed out the week with three hits against Eastern Connecticut State, two of which were doubles. Sheperd also drew three walks without striking out and finished with a .545 on-base percentage on the week. Playing third base, she also registered 19 assists and three putouts while holding a .917 fielding percentage.

 

SLIAC SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 12

Kaitlyn Johnson, Webster University

The sophomore from East Alton, Illinois worked 16 2/3 innings over four appearances last week for Webster, recording one win. She concluded the week with a 2.52 earned-run average, striking out four and walking just three. Johnson's win came in a 5-4 victory over Thiel in which she threw 7 2/3 innings, striking out three in the process. She made relief appearances in her next two games; working 1 2/3 against Alfred and two more innings against Kean. Johnson closed out her week with a no-decision against Arcadia, throwing 5 1/3 innings while allowing no earned runs and just five hits.

 

SLIAC MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 12

Riley Muren, Webster University

Muren, a sophomore from O'Fallon, Ill., is the SLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for March 12. Muren was 2-2 overall on the week with both wins coming at #1 singles for the Gorloks. He defeated his foe from Thomas 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 and followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Wisconsin-Lutheran. On the season Muren is 3-3 overall with all three wins coming in singles play.

Other Notables: 

  • Matt Harper, Spalding University (Baseball) Made his first collegiate start, going six scoreless innings while striking out 10. 
  • Emelia Modglin, Fontbonne University (Softball) Picked up a hit in all four games last week, going 6-for-14 at the plate, with two home runs and six RBI.
  • Blake Strebler, Westminster College (Baseball) Tallied five runs scored in a doubleheader against Elmhurst, finishing with three hits and one walk. 
  • Nate Tholl, Webster University (Baseball) Was 4-for-5, including two doubles, with two runs batted in and two stolen bases in a win over Rhodes. 
  • Garrett Wilson, Spalding University (Baseball) Finished with three hits, three runs scored, and two stolen bases in a win over Transylvania.
