SLIAC Players of the Week - March 26

We have a full slate of conference weekly awards and this week's winners include Corey Carter, Kerrigan Dura, Jimi Keating, Savannah Maloney, Dimitrije Mitic, Greg Sovie, Meredith Sowers, Maddie Strickland, Madison Watts, and Garrett Wilson.

 

SLIAC/DIAMOND SPORTS BASEBALL HITTER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 26

Garrett Wilson, Spalding University

Wilson, a sophomore from Shepherdsville, Ky., paced the Golden Eagle offense last week in a doubleheader sweep of Iowa Wesleyan. Wilson went 5-for-7 in the two games, crossing the plate five times. He also stole two bases in each of the games and drove in three runs. For the week Wilson finished with a .714 batting average and a .750 on-base percentage with a 1.143 slugging percentage. Wilson's top game was a 3-for-4 performance, with three doubles, two steals, and three runs scored in game one of the doubleheader. 

   

SLIAC/DIAMOND SPORTS BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 26

Jimi Keating, Spalding University

Keating, a senior from Bardstown, Ky., worked a complete game shutout win over Iowa Wesleyan to claim his third Player of the Week honor this season. Keating blanked the Tigers while allowing just three hits over seven innings of work. He struck out nine batters and walked just one as he notched his fifth win of the season.

 

SLIAC SOFTBALL HITTER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 26

Kerrigan Dura, Eureka College

Dura, a senior shortstop from Edwards, Ill., is the SLIAC Softball Hitter of the Week after helping the Red Devils to a conference doubleheader sweep of Blackburn. Dura went 6-for-10 at the plate on the day, driving in five runs and scoring three times. She burst out for four hits in game one including a home run and drove in five runs while scoring twice. She added two more hits in game two and finished the week with a .600 batting average and a 1.100 slugging percentage. 

 

SLIAC SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 26

Maddy Strickland, Fontbonne University

Strickland, a junior from High Ridge, Mo., takes the SLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week award after helping the Griffins notch a sweep in their first conference series of the season. Strickland worked seven innings against Iowa Wesleyan, holding them to just one run on three hits while striking out five. 

   

SLIAC MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - MARCH 26

Dimitrije Mitic, Webster University

Mitic, a junior from Belgrade, Serbia, takes the SLIAC Field Athlete of the Week award after his showing at the WashU Mini Meet. Mitic had a 3rd place finish in the javelin, throwing a distance of 141'06", the second longest throw in the conference this season. He also competed in the shot put for the Gorloks, finishing with a distance of 32'11.25".

   

SLIAC MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - MARCH 26  

Corey Carter, Principia College

Carter debuted for the Panthers track and field team with a pair of first-place finishes during the team's trip to Alabama for The Island Meet. Carter took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.97 seconds and added another top finish in the 200-meter race with a time of 21.75 seconds. Both times are the fastest among SLIAC runners this spring so far and his 200-meter time puts him fourth nationally.

    

SLIAC WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - MARCH 26  

Savannah Maloney, Greenville University

Savannah Maloney, a freshman from Edwardsville, Ill., recorded two top-three finishes at the WashU Mini Meet last weekend to take SLIAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors. Maloney grabbed first place in the discus throw with a distance of 110'4", the second longest throw in the conference this season. She also placed 3rd in the shot put with a mark of 31'6". 

   

SLIAC WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - MARCH 26  

Meredith Sowers, Webster University

Sowers, a sophomore from Rolla, Mo., tallied two top-ten finishes at the WashU Mini Meet over the weekend. Sowers grabbed 3rd place in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:24.09, the best time among conference runners this spring. She also took 10th place in the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 17.38 seconds, the third fastest time this spring for SLIAC competitors. 

 

SLIAC MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 26

Greg Sovie, Principia College

Sovie, a sophomore from Maggie Valley, N.C., picks up this week's SLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week. Sovie recorded a pair of singles wins last week while playing solid competition during the Panthers spring break trip to California. Playing at #3 singles Sovie defeated Occidental 6-4, 6-2 and Chapman 6-2, 6-1. 

 

SLIAC WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK - MARCH 26

Madison Watts, Webster University

Watts, a junior from Rogersville, Mo., was dominant last week in picking up SLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors. Watts dropped just one game in her three outings. Watts blanked her opponent from Fontbonne 6-0, 6-0 at #2 singles for her first conference win of the season. She teamed up with Monica Behrle to win 8-1 at #1 doubles and improve to 9-2 in doubles action this season.

Other Notables: 

  • Nate Bassett, Blackburn College (Baseball) Hit .714 with four RBI in a doubleheader against Iowa Wesleyan.
  • Miranda Green, Webster University (Track and Field) Placed first in the shot put with a mark of 35'6".  
  • Emelia Modglin, Fontbonne University (Softball) Went 5-for-7 in a doubleheader while driving in three runs.
  • Sierra Moore, Fontbonne University (Track and Field) Moore had two third-place finishes while competing in the shot put and discus events.
  • Nathan Potts, Greenville University (Track and Field) Recorded a pair of second-place finishes running in the 800-meter and 1500-meter race at the WashU Mini Meet.
  • Jarrett Sandlin, Blackburn College (Baseball) Picked up a complete game, nine inning win while striking out eight and allowing just one run to Iowa Wesleyan.
