AROUND THE SLIAC

Blackburn College

The Blackburn softball team will look to build on a 13 win 2017 season with 10 returning players and nine newcomers. Leading the list of newcomers is Daniele Burnell, who hit .432 with three home runs and 33 runs batted in. Coach Kerry Crum and the Beavers will start their season on March 2 by heading to Arkansas for a series of games.

Eureka College

Both of Eureka's basketball programs will be heading to the postseason with spots in the SLIAC Tournament. The men's team secured their first postseason trip since 2013 while the women are the defending SLIAC Tournament Champions and are making their seventh consecutive trip.

Fontbonne University

The Fontbonne men's basketball team suffered a loss to Principia in their final home game this season but just days before celebrated senior day with a thrilling 84-83 win over Iowa Wesleyan. Jared Woodcock sank a free-throw with nine-seconds on the clock to give the Griffins the win. Before the game, Fontbonne honored their lone senior James Wiggins.

Greenville University

The Greenville men's basketball team will look to close out the regular season on a high. They have currently won three straight, tied for the longest active streak in the league, and with a one-game lead in the standings are looking to secure tournament hosting rights. It won't come easy though as they face Spalding and Webster in their final two regular season games.

Iowa Wesleyan University

Brock Butler was named the Iowa Wesleyan University Student-Athlete of the Month for the second straight time. Butler recorded over 30 points in five of nine January games including a career-high 46 points. He averaged 29.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game during the month, shooting 48-percent from the field.

MacMurray College

After making a late run at an attempt for a postseason spot the Highlanders saw their hopes end last week. MacMurray had won four straight to move to 6-7 in conference play. However, they dropped two of their last three games over the last week, eliminating them from catching the fourth place team in the standings.

Principia College

Principia stopped a three-game skid with an 87-72 win over Fontbonne on Tuesday and will look to close out their season on a winning streak when they face Spalding on Saturday. Parker Davidson scored 28 points in the Panthers win on Tuesday while TreVaughn Goodman added 23 points.

Spalding University

The Spalding women's basketball is making a push for the postseason having won their last two games. The Golden Eagles are 7-6 in SLIAC play, good for fourth place in the standings by a half game over Westminster. Spalding will be on the road this week for two conference games as they face Webster and Blackburn.

Webster University

Webster University inducted five former student-athletes into their Hall of Fame last Saturday night. Those being honored as part of the 2018 class were Molly (Farrell) Orlando, Alex Fritts, Scott Spinner, Jeff Todt, and Paul Zellmer. To read a full list of their accomplishments click HERE

Westminster College

Jessie Kuykendall was named to the 2018 USTFCCCA All-Academic team. Kuykendall holds a 3.68 grade-point average and was one of 368 women's cross country runners to earn the honor. In addition the Westminster women's program was one of 221 teams to receive the team award.
