SLIAC Game of the Week: Blackburn at Westminster

 

At a Glance

We are now at the half-way point of the conference schedule, where games become more important. This week's SLIAC Game of the Week is an important one for both Blackburn College and Westminster College as the two men's teams meet on Wednesday night. Westminster is currently tied for 3rd place in the standings while Blackburn is on the outside looking in for a playoff spot. The two teams will meet in Fulton, Mo. on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Blackburn College 'BEAVERS'

Blackburn stopped a two-game losing streak with an 87-68 victory over MacMurray on Saturday. The Beavers are now 8-9 overall and 5-5 in the SLIAC after winning 4 of 6 games in the month of January. The Beavers are third in the conference in scoring at 84.1 points per game and knock down 13.4 three-pointers per outing, second-most in the league. 

Karson Hayes leads the team at 19.9 points per game and is hitting on 47-percent of his three-point shots. Duncan King is averaging 13.1 points and 3.0 assists per game while Raushaun Amos is putting up 11.4 points per game while hitting 48 three's this year. When they do decide to go inside they turn to Jamaya Wyatt who is averaging 7.1 points and a team-high 5.1 rebounds per game while shooting 52-percent from the field.

        

Westminster College 'BLUE JAYS'

Westminster sits at 8-9 overall and tied for the 3rd place in the SLIAC standings with a 7-3 record. The Blue Jays are coming off a 136-125 win over Greenville on Monday. Westminster maintains a slow pace on offense, getting off just 58.5 shots per game, averaging 76.4 points per game. However, the Blue Jays are also the best team in the league in ball possession, averaging just 12.9 turnovers per game.

Romo Tabb leads the team at 18.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while guard Kobe Wands is one of the best long-range shooters in the league. Wands is averaging 15.4 points per game and has a team-high 29 three-pointers this year. The big man inside is Stu Hollandsworth, who is averaging 9.7 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 54-percent from the field. Carter Wands, brother to Kobe, runs the offense and is averaging 8.4 points while ranking 3rd in the SLIAC with 76 assists and 5th in steals with 32.

 

Last Meeting
Blackburn won the first meeting this season 73-62 in Carlinville, Ill. The Beavers jumped out to a 39-30 halftime lead before holding off the Blue Jays in the second half. Karson Hayes had a team-leading 16 points for Blackburn as the Beavers outrebounded the Blue Jays 46-29 in the game. Westminster was led by Romo Tabb with 17 points.

Game Notes

  • The all-time series between Blackburn and Westminster is tied up at 29-29 with Blackburn having won three straight games.
  • Blackburn's top five scorers are all connecting on at least 40-percent of their three-point shots.
  • Westminster's Romo Tabb is the only player in the SLIAC to rank in the top five in both total points and total rebounds this season.
  • Blackburn will hold the school's Alumni Game this Saturday when they host Greenville at 3 p.m.
  • This is the middle game of a three-game homestand for Westminster, which concludes on Saturday against Eureka.
