SLIAC Game of the Week: Spalding at Principia

This week's SLIAC Game of the Week is with an eye towards the postseason as Spalding University and Principia College meet in a women's soccer contest. Spalding starts the week with a 6-5-1 overall record and a 3-2 SLIAC record while Principia is 2-9 overall and 2-3 in the SLIAC. The two teams will meet on Saturday, October 20 in Elsah, Illinois at 12 p.m.

Principia College 'PANTHERS'

Principia comes into the week with a 2-9 overall record but snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over Iowa Wesleyan in their last time on the pitch. The Panthers will host Eureka on Tuesday before facing Spalding this weekend. 

Principia has scored 13 times this season, ranking 8th in the league, and average 10.9 shots per game. Defensively they have recorded two shutouts this fall. Sarai Marcano leads the team with 13 points including six goals, which ranks 12th in the league. Maddie Wann has added three goals and two assists while Brittany Ouellette is tied with Wann for the team lead with two assists. In net, the Panthers have Hannah Hathaway, who holds a 78-percent save percentage with 110 saves. 

        

Spalding University 'GOLDEN EAGLES'

Spalding is coming off a 1-0 win over Eureka last weekend and will face Webster on Thursday before taking on Principia. The Golden Eagles are currently 6-5-1 overall and 3-2 in the SLIAC.

Spalding is 6th in the league with 20 goals scored, averaging 13.0 shots per game. Kelsie Huffman leads the team with six goals for 12 points including two game-winners. Meghan Ogden is one of the team's top playmakers with a team-high four assists while also adding two goals. In goal, the Golden Eagles have a young tandem of Kayla Strehle (82-percent save percentage) and Ashlee Wilson (16 saves in three starts). 

 

Last Meeting
Spalding defeated Principia 3-2 in their last meeting, Sept. 30, 2017. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead but saw the Panthers even the sore with a pair of goals just three minutes apart in the second half. Sarah Cornett would score the game-winner in the 81st minute for Spalding. Spalding outshot Principia 21-9 in the game.
