McEwen Among Five To Join Westminster College Hall of Fame

Five new honorees will be inducted into the Westminster College Athletics Hall of Fame during a weekend of recognition activities October 7-8 in conjunction with Homecoming. Gary Hoemann, '77 of St. Louis, MO; Jim McEwen of New Bloomfield, MO; John Squires, '99 of Castle Pines, CO; Logan Stanley, '00 from Joplin, MO; and Casey (Lionberger) Zastrow, '02 from Washington, MO; will all be honored. Stanley is being recognized for football; Hoemann for basketball; Squires for football and basketball; Zastrow for basketball and volleyball; and McEwen as Director of Athletics and head coach for men's basketball.

Four of the inductees have ties to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference; McEwen was head men's basketball coach for the Blue Jays while Zastrow was a two sport athlete playing women's basketball and volleyball. Meanwhile both Squires and Stanley were members of the Blue Jay football team in the late 1990's when the time the SLIAC sponsored football. The final remaining inductee, Hoemann, was also a football player during the 1970's.

Hoemann was a four-year varsity letter-winner for men's basketball. During the 1976-77 season, Hoemann earned NAIA All-District 16 honors. He is second on the all-time scoring list with 1,793 points, which was a school record when he graduated. He held the record for 19 years until it was broken in 1996. He is fourth all-time in rebounds with 748.

McEwen was an administrator and men's basketball coach at Westminster from 1984-1998. He amassed a record of 188-199 and won the Ozark Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year twice, in the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. His players earned a total of 24 All-Conference picks across the three conferences Westminster played in during his 14 years. McEwen coached his teams to eight SLIAC Tournament appearances and won the tournament in the 1994-95 season.

Squires was a four-year varsity letter-winner for football. He holds the game day record for touchdown receptions with four against Colorado College on Oct. 30, 1999. Squires was chosen as a SLIAC All-Conference first team member three times from 1997-99. His freshman season, he earned a second team nod. His 204 receptions places him third all-time. Squires also was a member of the men's basketball team, scoring 917 total points to land him among the top-20 scorers in school history.

Stanley was a four-year varsity letter-winner as a tight end for Westminster football from 1997-2000. Stanley was a SLIAC first team All-Conference selection in 1998, and was honored with a second team pick in 1997 and 1999. In 1998, he was selected as part of the Football Gazette All-American first team, the Hewlett-Packard All-America first team, and the USA III Football All-American second team.

Zastrow was a member of the volleyball team for four years and the basketball team for two. She is a member of the 1,000 Kill Club and won the SLIAC Newcomer of the Year Award in 1998 for volleyball. In her first two seasons, she earned a spot on the SLIAC second team. As a junior and senior, she was selected as a member of the All-Conference first team. Her junior season of basketball, she earned a SLIAC second team nod.

The Westminster College Athletics Hall of Fame, originally established in 1998 as the Intercollegiate Athletic Who's Who, was designed to recognize those individuals who have excelled in athletics and/or made significant contributions for their sports. Individuals selected have not only left a mark in the Blue Jay record book but gone on to achieve success in life, while making contributions to the success and reputation of Westminster College.

The Hall of Fame committee members voting on inductees includes the athletic director, sports information director, an alumni staff member and selected Hall of Fame members.  The yearly Hall of Fame class shall not exceed five members.

"These athletics of excellence have upheld their strength of ability both on and off the field or court and given pride and spirit in the Westminster community through their achievements."
