Westminster Sweeps SLIAC Post-Graduate Honors; Teubner and Zalis

Glenn Teubner and Andrea Zalis, both seniors at Westminster College, have been named the 2017 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients. They become just the second pair of student-athletes from the same institution to receive the award in the same school year.

Glenn Teubner, a Biology major with a 3.73 grade-point average, is a cross country and track and field athlete at Westminster. As a student-athlete Teubner has won several conference Player of the Week awards, culminating with Cross Country First Team All-Conference honors this past fall. Academically Teubner has the goal of becoming a dentist and founded the Westminster Pre-Dental Club.

Teubner's efforts in the community are just as impressive. He has served as a camp counselor and lifeguard at Camp Aurora Ministries for the past three summers and as a camp counselor with Jefferson City High School's Cross Country Camp the last two years. In 2013 Teubner volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and in 2015 he completed a service project with Jefferson City Day Care Center. In addition, Teubner is an active member of the Westminster Poverty Initiative, went on a two week trip to Belize as part of the World Health Empowerment Project, and completed Suicide Prevention Training.

Teubner plans on attending the University of Missouri-Kansas City in pursuit of a Doctorate of Dental Surgery. He is the fourth male student-athlete from Westminster College to receive the SLIAC Post-Graduate Scholarship.

Andrea Zalis is the second consecutive Female Blue Jay student-athlete to receive the conference scholarship award. Zalis, a forward on the women's basketball team for the past four years, will leave her mark on the Blue Jays program after an impressive four-year career. Zalis capped her career by being named D3hoops.com Second Team All-Region, the first player from the SLIAC to earn those honors since 2013-14. She was also named the SLIAC Co-Player of the Year after leading the conference in both points (17.7) and rebounds (8.3) per game. She holds program records for career points, career blocked shots, season points, season rebounds, single game points, and single game rebounds.

Zalis was not just a standout on the court but a leader, serving as a team captain. Her leadership transcended sports. She has served as a volunteer at the Mark Twain Elementary School, helped coordinate basketball games with the Missouri School of Deaf, worked with Missouri Special Olympics, and volunteered at several youth camps. In addition, Zalis has served as a mentor for transfer students at Westminster, was a member of the Student Ambassadors, and helped raise money for malnutrition in Africa through "Project Peanut Butter".

In the classroom, Zalis holds a 3.93 grade-point average while majoring in Early Childhood Education. Her graduate study plans include Education Leadership with the goal of becoming an administrator in an educational setting.

The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Post Graduate Scholarship is presented to two graduating senior student-athletes each year.  Student-athletes are nominated by their institution's Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), must have earned two varsity letters in a sport in which the Conference sponsors a Championship and have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale). Scholarship recipients are selected through a vote of the Conference FARs and receive a scholarship during their first two-years of postgraduate studies.
