Westminster Presented With SLIAC Commissioner's Cup

Westminster Presented With SLIAC Commissioner's Cup

This week at the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fall administrative meeting Westminster College was presented with the first-ever SLIAC Commissioner's Cup. Last summer league members approved a new award to be handed out, the Commissioner's Cup. This prestigious award will be presented to the institution that wins both the conference All-Sports Trophy and the conference's Sportsmanship Award in the same academic year.

Two years ago Westminster College accomplished the feat, winning the school's first-ever All-Sports Trophy, finishing the 2015-16 year with 95.0 total points. That year the Blue Jays won two regular-season titles; men's soccer and women's basketball, while also finishing in the top four in the standings in 11 of the 12 conference sponsored sports. Points are awarded based on each of the institutions' athletic teams finishes in the regular season or tournament play.

That same year the Blue Jays took home the SLIAC Sportsmanship award. The Blue Jays men's basketball, women's basketball, and women's tennis teams won their individual sport sportsmanship awards. The SLIAC Sportsmanship award recognizes the institution whose athletics program as a whole demonstrates the ideals of sportsmanship based on the results of each of the 12 team sportsmanship awards.

The SLIAC Commissioner's Cup is a traveling trophy and will be presented to and held by the institution that wins both the All-Sports Trophy and Sportsmanship Award. Westminster College is the first and only school to accomplish that feat in the eight years that both awards have been presented. The SLIAC Commissioner's Cup was graciously paid for by Dr. Lee Ellis and his wife Dr. Julie Blase.
