MacMurray to Celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day

In the words of the legendary Martina McBride, "this one's for the girls."

On Wednesday, February 6, MacMurray Athletics will participate in a nationwide celebration of the 33rd annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. MacMurray Athletics boasts over 80 female student-athletes across seven varsity sports, with a few multi-sport athletes.

Additionally, seven women hold multiple roles on the MacMurray Athletics staff, ranging from faculty athletics representative, athletic training, sports information and coaching. Below are the ways MacMurray will honor and celebrate its female student-athletes.

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

Wednesday morning from 9-11 a.m., all are welcome to grab a free donut on the second floor of the Education Complex. In addition to the free breakfast, there will be a slideshow of quotes from our coaches, thanking our female student-athletes. Everyone is welcome to grab a donut, and those that are non-female athletes can leave a thank you note on a board provided to our females in addition to their breakfast.

ALUMNAE UPDATE

Throughout the day, our social media accounts will feature updates from alumnae across various sports and years. The alumnae will share how being a student-athlete at MacMurray has helped and empowered them in their current job.

CURRENT STUDENT-ATHLETE FEATURES

Seven student-athletes have been nominated by their respective head coaches to be featured on our social media as well. All day long, graphics will be released featuring these student-athletes and quotes from them on how being a female empowers them on the field, court or mat.

WOMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

A panel of student-athletes has been selected to speak to the female student-athletes at Jacksonville High School sometime next week. Our student-athletes will facilitate a question and answer session where JHS students can learn about being a collegiate female student-athlete.

WALL OF HONOR

Once more chosen by the head coaches, a slideshow will be run in the athletics offices for the remainder of the week, which will feature the team's greatest accomplishment this season from each of the seven women's teams.

"We are so excited to celebrate this special day," said SWA Danielle Doerfler. "Through the work of our coaches, we have created a series of events and social media highlights that we feel will help thank and celebrate our female student-athletes, coaches and alumnae. We are privileged with a current group of female student-athletes who are passionate about being role models for our athletic department, hardworking staff and a previous group of alumnae that have led us forward to where we are now. It will be a wonderful day to celebrate this special group of MacFam."

This year's theme, Lead Her Forward, is designed to honor the many ways that sports push girls and women to achieve excellence and realize their boundless potential. The Women's Sports Foundation applauds the vital role played by the individuals and organizations championing girls and women in sports (per ngwsd.org).
