SLIAC Players of the Week - March 4

   

SLIAC/Diamond Sports Baseball Hitter of the Week
Ben Swords, Webster University

Swords, a sophomore from Freeport, Ill., was a driving force for the Gorloks offense this week; accounting for five of the team's 12 runs over four games, including three wins. He hit .333 on the week, going 6-for-18, with an on-base percentage of .400 and a slugging percentage of .722. He hit two home runs, along with one double, while driving in five runs. Swords hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th against Buena Vista.

     
   

SLIAC/Diamond Sports Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Sean Beaver, Webster University

Sean Beaver, a sophomore from San Diego, Calif., is the Pitcher of the Week after making two appearances for the Gorloks last week. He started against Transylvania, working 7 scoreless innings while striking out eight. Just four days he later he came in relief against Buena Vista, throwing 3 2/3 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out nine. On the week he allowed no runs and just eight hits in 10 2/3 innings pitched while striking out 17 and walking only two.

     
   

SLIAC Softball Hitter of the Week
Emelia Modglin, Fontbonne University

Modglin, a senior from Waterloo, Ill., went 3-for-6 in a doubleheader against Maryville in the Griffins season-opening series last week. She had one hit in game one and followed with two hits in game two of the series. All three hits were singles. As a catcher, she also threw out two runners attempting to steal and finished with a 1.000 fielding percentage. 

     
   

SLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week
Diamond Thomas, Fontbonne University

Diamond Thomas is the inaugural SLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for the 2019 season. Thomas, a senior from Waynesville, Mo., made her debut against Maryville last week, working six innings and allowing just one run. She worked her way through the start by allowing eight hits and one walk. 

     
   

SLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Charlie McGhee, Webster University

Charlie McGhee takes Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors after registering three wins last week for the Gorloks. McGhee, a senior from Waterloo, Ill., won both of his singles matches at the #3 spot and picked up another win at #2 doubles. He won 8-2 over Kentucky Wesleyan in singles play and followed with a 9-7 singles win over Brescia. His doubles win, with Austin Nation, was an 8-2 victory over Brescia.

     
   

SLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Paige Cooley, Principia College

Cooley is the first SLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week award winner for the 2019 season. The senior from Traverse City, Mich., rolled off four overall wins last week including a pair at #1 singles. She breezed through her singles opponents with wins of 6-2, 6-0 over Truman State and 6-0, 6-0 over Greenville. Cooley added two more wins at #1 doubles, along with teammate Gabby Kitchingman.

  • Lance Chapman, Fontbonne University (Baseball) Went 2-for-4 with four RBI in a win over Nebraska Wesleyan.
  • Zach Greenie, Principia College (Baseball) Went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI in the second game of a doubleheader against Robert Morris-Chicago.
  • Aleq McMullin, Principia College (Baseball) Worked 7 scoreless innings against Robert Morris-Chicago, recording 12 strikeouts.
  • Garrett Wilson, Spalding University (Baseball) Had four two-hit games for Spalding while also driving in four and stealing two bases.
  • Austin Wombacher, MacMurray College (Baseball) Had five hits and three RBI in two games last week for the Highlanders.
