SLIAC Players of the Week - April 1

   

SLIAC/Diamond Sports Baseball Hitter of the Week
Garrett Wilson, Spalding University

Garrett Wilson claims his first weekly award of the season after helping the Golden Eagles to a pair of conference wins last week. Wilson, a junior outfielder, hit .429 in the doubleheader sweep of MacMurray. He started the day by going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases in game one and concluded the day with another hit and RBI in game two. He finished the week going 3-for-7 at the plate with one run scored, three runs batted in, and three stolen bases.

     
   

SLIAC/Diamond Sports Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Ian Cassidy, Westminster College

Cassidy worked 7 innings in a 3-1 win over Webster. The senior held the Gorloks to just five hits with one unearned run. He struck out 11 in the complete game win, which marked his second win of the season. 

     
   

SLIAC Softball Hitter of the Week
Madison Washington, Westminster College

Washington recorded six hits in three games last week for the Blue Jays, finishing with a .750 batting average for the week. She was 3-for-3 against Principia, driving in two and adding one stolen base. Washington followed with two more hits in game one of a doubleheader against Webster, driving in four and added another hit in game two. She finished with a .700 on-base percentage and .875 slugging percentage for the week. 

     
   

SLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week
Caitie Opp, Greenville University

Caitie Opp is the SLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week after notching a win over Fontbonne last week. Opp, a senior from Pinckneyville, Ill., worked a complete game shut over the Griffins. She went 7 innings, allowing just five hits while striking out three.

     
   

SLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Greg Sovie, Principia College

Sovie, a junior, put together a 4-0 week for the Panthers. He tallied two wins at #3 singles; defeating Carroll and Carthage. Sovie also recorded two more wins at #1 doubles with his partner Wyatt Dale. Sovie's singles win clinched the team win for Principia against Carthage. 

     
   

SLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Paige Cooley, Principia College

Paige Cooley picks up her third weekly award this spring after going 4-0 on the week for Principia. Cooley, a senior from Traverse City, Mich., picked up wins at #1 singles and #1 doubles last week. She cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Fontbonne and 6-2, 6-0 win over Simpson in singles action. Cooley also added two doubles wins with teammate Gabby Kitchingman in doubles play.

     
   

SLIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Greih Murray, Fontbonne University

Greih Murray is the SLIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Murray, a sophomore from Jefferson City, Mo., competed in three events for the Griffins last weekend at the Dr. Creer Invite. Murray placed 4th in the discus with a distance of 34.08 meters, setting a new school record. He also threw a personal best of 28.07 meters in the hammer throw and took 10th place in the shot put.

     
   

SLIAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Nathan Freyling, Webster University

Freyling, a sophomore, picks up SLIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors. While competing at the WashU Invitational Freyling finished his 5K race in a time of 15:55. That was a personal best time and he is currently 2nd in the conference rankings this season.

     
   

SLIAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week
Raven Venegas, Fontbonne University

Raven Venegas recorded a pair of top-three finishes last weekend to take home this week's conference award. Venegas, a junior from Racine, Wis., set a new school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.66 meters; taking 3rd place at the Dr. Creer Invite. She also finished 2nd in the shot put with a throw of 11.59 meters.

     
   

SLIAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Kelsey Phillips, Spalding University

Phillips wins her second straight weekly award after competing in the Bellarmine Invite over the weekend. Phillips, a junior from Shepherdsville, Ky., finished her 5K race in a time of 18:43, ranking her 2nd this season in the SLIAC and 13th overall at the meet.

  • Beth Mersinger, Greenville (Softball) Drove in five while picking up two hits, in a win over Fontbonne
  • Jack Parisi, Spalding (Baseball) Struck out 10 batters in eight innings of work in a win over MacMurray
  • Katie Price, Westminster (Softball) Allowed one hit in a five-inning shutout win over Webster
  • Michael Puckett, Fontbonne (Baseball) Tallied four hits against Illinois College
  • Sara Rice, Webster (Tennis) Tallied two wins last week at #1 singles and #1 doubles
  • Matt Staker, Webster (Baseball) Pounded out four hits while driving in three against Westminster
  • Will Stonecipher, Westminster (Baseball) Had two hits with a solo home run in a win over Webster
