Iowa Wesleyan Claims 2019 SLIAC/SAAC Service Award

In a back and forth competition it was Iowa Wesleyan University that pulled in front to take home the 2018-19 SLIAC/SAAC Service Challenge Award. Iowa Wesleyan pulled away in the spring semester thanks to their annual Special Olympics event. The school totaled over 24,000 points in the spring alone and finished the year with a new SLIAC/SAAC Challenge record 52,996 points. Iowa Wesleyan had finished 2nd in the race in each of the last three years.

MacMurray College, who had won the previous five years, finished 2nd this year with 35,970 total points. Greenville University placed 3rd with Principia College and Westminster College rounding out the top five with all three schools also recording more than 10,000 points this season. In all the 10 SLIAC members totaled 142,973 points this year, a new league record and an increase of over 15,000 points from last year's total.

The SLIAC/SAAC Service Award was established in 2013 with the goal of recognizing an institution that went above and beyond in giving back to their community. In 2016 the SLIAC expanded the award criteria to include community service projects, collections (food and clothing), and donations. Full criteria and the point system is listed below:

10 pts/ service hour per student-athlete
5 pts/item donation (clothes, shoes, toys, games, equipment)
1 pt/ $1.00
1 pt/ per 2 cans
