FULTON, Mo. - Katie Price's dominant week continued with a perfect game allowing no batters in game one, while senior Amber Tepen hit a walk-off single to earn two wins for Westminster softball.
"This was a great senior day and a great way to end with Amber getting the walkoff," said Westminster Head Coach Joe Henderson. "She is the most decorated player in history. I am elated for her and sad that our time together is coming to an end. She is the heart and soul of this team."
The Blue Jays improve to 12-12 overall and a perfect 8-0 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
In game one, Westminster came out with strong bats and even stronger defense. Price didn't allow a single hit for the second time this week, after throwing a no-hitter at Webster earlier this week.
The Blue Jays got on the board early, scoring two runs on RBI from Tepen and Price in the first inning. The second inning was the big one for Westminster with five runs crossing the plate, including a double from Brooke Laidley to score two runs.
Laidley and Price each added another RBI in the fourth, while Madison Washington and Aubrie Vaughn earned their first of the game to make the final score 11-0.
In game two, the Blue Jays struggled to produce offensively, but the strong defense remained intact. The Beavers scored their only run in the fourth inning, while Madison Ingram pitched all seven innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, with the score 1-0, Westminster sent the top of the lineup to the plate for their last chance to keep their perfect conference record.
Samantha Henderson started the hitting off with a single to left field. Brooklyn Bledsoe bunted to move her into scoring position, putting leadoff batter Emily Holloway up with two outs. Holloway sent a line drive single back to the pitcher, reaching first safely and moving Henderson to third. Laidley stepped up to the plate, crushing a single to centerfield to score the tying run and making the score tied at one run apiece.
The lone senior Tepen stepped up on Senior Day to drive in Holloway on a single to left-center field, giving the Blue Jays the 2-1 win in the bottom of the seventh.
"Offensively we hit the ball well today and defensively we were flawless," said Henderson. The team committed no errors on the day. "We played hard and with the energy that conference play demands. These were great ball games."
Westminster travels to Iowa Wesleyan Wednesday to put their eight-game win streak and perfect conference record on the line yet again.
