How It Happened
In the first quarter, the Griffins opened with a commanding 12-4 lead on Rylee Stafford's 3-pointer. The Tigers trimmed the deficit down to five (13-8) at the 3:21 mark on Allie Massner's bucket, though the Griffins finished out the final three minutes on a 6-2 run with Riley Guffey hitting her 3-pointer with just under a minute remaining to give them a 19-10 lead after one.
In the second, the Griffins netted the first eight points to extend its advantage out to 27-10 on Kourtney White's layup just a minute and 59 seconds in.
Later, a bucket from Mallory Proffer had Fontbonne well out in front, 39-20, with 2:16 remaining. Fontbonne was able to maintain its double-digit lead the rest of the way and went into the locker room on top, 41-29.
In the third, the Griffins once again started out fast going on a 9-0 run as Jillian Venegas' layup gave them a 50-29 lead with 7:39 to go. Fontbonne outscored Iowa Wesleyan 24-12 in the quarter and went 10-of-19 from the field to own a 65-41 advantage going into the fourth.
In the fourth, despite the Griffins being outscored 23-8 and going just 2-of-13 from the field, the teams lead proved to be large enough as they held on for the nine-point win.
Inside The Numbers
- Fontbonne finished with a 43.1 field goal percentage and outrebounded the Tigers, 34-25.
- Defensively they forced 21 turnovers and turned that into 20 points.
- Fontbonne also dominated second chance points at 19-3.
- Iowa Wesleyan ended with a 44.9 field goal percentage.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Rylee Stafford led the way with a team-high 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting.
- Riley Guffey ended with 13 points, six boards, and four assists.
- Jillian Venegas contributed a season-high 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
- Kourtney White came off the bench to add 10 points, a game-high seven rebounds, along with four rebounds and four steals.
Iowa Wesleyan Leaders
- Maddie Williamson totaled a game-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting.
- Allie Massner added 16 points and Harriet Fowler was the leader off the bench with 15 points.
