CARLINVILLE, Ill.
Junior Sara Wemlinger led the Maryville University women’s basketball team in scoring for the second consecutive game, as the Saints defeated Blackburn College 90-48 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play. Maryville improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the SLIAC with the win, and they extend their regular season conference win streak to 62 games. Maryville jumped out to an early lead on a three-point shot by junior Courtney Bergheger, but Blackburn scored four straight points to take their only lead of the game, 4-3, at the 16:12 mark. Junior Megan McCabe hit a three-pointer at 15:31 to start a 17-2 Maryville run that quickly gave the Saints a 14-point advantage. The Saints finished the first half shooting an outstanding 50.0 percent (15-of-30) from the field, 88.9 percent (8-of-9) from behind the arc and 88.9 percent (8-of-9) from the charity stripe. They went on to shoot 48.4 percent (31-of-64) for the game, including 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from three-point range and 85.0 percent (17-of-20) from the free throw line. Maryville also out rebounded the Beavers 38-28 and forced a total of 25 turnovers. Wemlinger scored a game-high 17 points on 6-of-10 (.600) shooting from the field, 3-of-3 (1.000) from behind the arc and 2-of-2 (1.000) from the charity stripe. McCabe added 14 points on 5-of-7 (.714) shooting from the field and 2-of-3 (.667) from three-point range, while fellow junior Kim Douglas was the only other Saints player to score in double digits with 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting from behind the arc. Other contributors for the Saints include senior Natalie Burke (5 rebounds, 4 points), juniors Bergheger (6 points), Allie Wilhelm (6 points, 4 rebounds), Corinne Vogel (5 points, 4 rebounds) and Tracy Freise (6 points) and sophomore Abby Brunnert (9 points, 4 rebounds). Blackburn’s Meghan Polston recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Sierra Shipley added 14 points and four rebounds, while Lovie McClom had eight points, two rebounds and two assists. Maryville will return to action next Saturday, December 15, when they travel across town to take on nationally ranked No. 18 Washington University-St. Louis in a 1:00 pm game.
