Eureka Ends 2017 Season in 10-3 Loss at Westminster

FULTON, Mo. – The Eureka College baseball team brought its 2017 season to a close Sunday, falling in a 10-3 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Westminster in Fulton, Mo.

Westminster moved in front in the second inning thanks to a solo home run from Nick Cessna and a run-scoring single from Nick Bohlmann for a 2-0 cushion. Eureka cut its deficit in half in the fourth, 2-1, when freshman Braxten Ary (Manito, Ill./Midwest Central H.S.) started the inning with an infield single and later scored on an RBI double by junior Ray Vogel (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone H.S.). WC answered with a sacrifice fly by Blake Strebler and an RBI single from Will Stonecipher to push extend its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

EC got a run back in the sixth when Vogel singled to plate sophomore catcher Grant Mullin (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) to trail 4-2. WC promptly answered with two more runs in the bottom of the frame and later took advantage of two EC errors in the eighth to score four more times and push the lead to 10-2.

Pinch hitter Tom Smith (Princeville, Ill./Princeville H.S.) added an RBI groundout for EC in the ninth.

Vogel and sophomore Jeremy Sinople (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) each doubled as part of two-hit efforts Sunday. Vogel finished the day with two RBI.

Eureka ended its season with a 6-29 overall record and a 3-19 mark against SLIAC opponents.
