DECATUR, Ill. — The Maryville University women’s basketball team opened the 2007-08 season with a 92-77 victory versus Robert Morris College-Springfield at the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament hosted by Millikin University.

The Saints got off to a slow start, as Robert Morris took the early lead. Maryville’s offense struggled to get into a rhythm, and they didn’t take control of the game until the 8:43 mark in the first half when junior Sara Wemlinger sank a three-point shot, starting a 20-2 run which took the Saints from two points down to a 19-point advantage. Maryville extended their lead to as many as 24 points with 29 seconds remaining in the first half, and ended with a 48-26 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, Maryville’s offense and defense took over. The Saints led by as many as 28 points for the game and finished with a 47.7 field goal percentage and a 90.9 free throw percentage.

Junior Courtney Bergheger picked up right where she left off last season, scoring a team-high 21 points and pulling down six rebounds. Bergheger shot 9-of-12 (.750) from the field and also had three steals. Senior Toni Picerno added 15 points and five steals, while junior Allie Wilhelm and sophomore Abby Brunnert had 14 points apiece. Wemlinger also finished with nine points, three steals and two assists.

Robert Morris was led by KeAmber Vaughn with 23 points and seven rebounds. Lindsey Roger added 19 points, and Latoya Gipson finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

The Saints now advance to the tournament championship and will face nationally ranked No. 18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 4:00 pm, tomorrow, Saturday, November 16.
