Gorloks snap three game losing steak 57-38 at MacMurray

(Jacksonville, Ill.) – The Webster Gorloks put together arguably its most complete performance of the season in a 57-38 win at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill., on Saturday afternoon. With the win Webster snaps its three game losing streak and wins for just the second time on the road this season.

The Gorloks (10-12, 4-9 SLIAC) jumped out to quick 4-0 lead on jumpers from Katy Meyer and Erin Chesnek and held the Highlanders (2-18, 1-13 SLIAC) to just a pair of throws in the first seven minutes of the contest. WU built its lead to as many as 15 points in the frame behind a very balanced scoring effort led by Meyer with seven and Julie McGirl and Jenny Venegoni with six apiece. Each team had problems holding onto the basketball with a combined 31 turnovers (17 on MC, 14 for WU). Webster shot 50 percent (13-of-26) from the floor while holding MacMurray to just 5-of-16 (31 percent) in the frame to head into the break with a 29-16 advantage.

The Gorloks continued to find success on the both ends of the floor in the second frame allowing them to hold its double digit lead and not allow the Highlanders to cut the lead to single digits. Webster eventually built its lead to 55-32 on a Vengoni lay-up with about three minutes to play before MacMurray scored six of the final eight points of the game including the last four cut the final deficit to 19 points. Webster did the job on the defensive end forcing MC into 33 turnovers resulting in 38 points and limited them to just 32 percent shooting (7-of-21) for the game and out rebounded the Highlanders by a 34-28 margin.

Meyer led all scorers with 19 points, one shy of her career high, Venegoni dropped in eight while McGirl and Chesnek had seven apiece.

Rene’ Evans had 13 points for MacMurray while Abby Lowe had 12 points.
