Beavers Lose Double Header to Eureka

Beavers Lose Double Header to Eureka

Blackburn Softball took a pair of difficult losses to Eureka on Friday afternoon. The Beavers lost game one by a score of 3-2, and game two by a final score of 10-4.

Game one was decided in the sixth inning, as Eureka and Blackburn had each scored just one run up until the sixth inning. After a scoreless game through three innings, Eureka's offense finally managed to plate a run in the top of the fourth. Blackburn answered in the bottom of the fifth, as Grace Mackey singled to right field. After Miley Kwiatkowski took over baserunning for Mackey, she immediately stole second. After taking third base on a wild pitch, Kwiatkowski scored on an RBI groundout from Zoe Mitchell

Eureka quickly regained the lead in the top of the sixth. After a hit, an error by the Beavers allowed a run to score, giving Eureka the lead back. The Red Devils added another run from a SAC fly later in the inning, giving them a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Beavers manufactured a run on a double from Madi Fry, which allowed Chelsea Terranova to score. However, the Beavers offense would not be able to generate enough momentum to bring themselves back into the game in the seventh, and Eureka won the game.

Game two was more explosive offensively for both teams. Eureka scored the first run of the game through a solo home run in the top of the second inning. They added three more runs in the top of the third through several consecutive hits. However, the defensive effort from Blackburn got them off the field. After adding another run in the top of the fourth, the Beavers finally managed to get their own spark on offense. In the bottom of the fourth, Breana Allen led off with a single to right field. After an error by Eureka, Allen was at third, and Lexi Shaw pinch ran for Madi Fry at second base. McKenzie Smith doubled to drive in both runs. Zoe Mitchell followed this hit with a single, forcing a pitching change from Eureka.

Holly Heuerman singled to left field following the pitching change, keeping the momentum charged for Blackburn. Chelsea Ashlock drove in two more runs for the Beavers on a fielder's choice, which made the score 5-4. Unfortunately for Blackburn, these would be the only runs they could manage to plate during the game.

Eureka added five runs to their total in the top of the sixth inning, which secured the win for them.

Taylor Girth took the loss on the mound in game one for the Beavers, while Jesse Tomson took the loss in game two.

The Beavers will have Easter weekend to rest up before they head to Maranatha Baptist for their next double header, which is scheduled for Monday, April 10th. First pitch of game one is set for 3:00 p.m.
