JOPLIN, Mo.
The Maryville University men’s basketball team lost their third consecutive game with a 98-49 loss to NCAA Division II Missouri Southern State University. The Saints fall to 1-3 overall and Mo. Southern remains undefeated at 4-0.
Maryville got on the board first and held a small lead until the 13:30 mark, when Mo. Southern went up by one point on a layup by Vincent Ateba. The Saints took one more lead and led by as many as four points with 11:41 remaining in the first period, but the Lions took over once again and quickly increased their lead to 15 points heading into halftime.
Mo. Southern did not let up in the second half, as they shot 48.8 percent (20-of-41) from the field and 85.7 percent (20-of-26) from the charity stripe. Maryville, on the other hand, struggled on offense, shooting 0-of-9 from three-point range and only 6-of-22 (.273) from the field in the second half. The Saints also committed 40 turnovers total for the game.
Junior Drew Simmons was the lone Saints player to score in double figures. He finished with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Fellow junior Aaron Steinke added nine points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Senior Casey Holland grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and also tallied two blocks, while junior Teddy McGrath recorded six rebounds, five points and one assist.
Mo. Southern was led by TJ Britton with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals. Tony Webb added 13 points, and Stanly Titsworth and Skyler Bowlin scored 12 points apiece. Octavius Hawkins pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Lions to a 44-40 rebounding advantage for the game.
Maryville will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, November 24, when they take on NCAA Division II Pittsburg State University at 5:00 pm as part of the Missouri Southern Classic.
