UW-Platteville 81, Maryville (Mo.) 69
Nov 17, 2007

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Junior Aaron Steinke scored a game-high 23 points and the Saints shot 52.6 percent from three-point range, but it wasn’t enough to take them past University of Wisconsin-Platteville, as they suffered an 81-69 defeat at the hands of the host at the Pioneer Tip-Off Classic.

Wis.-Platteville (2-0) took an early lead and quickly increased their margin to double digits less than five minutes into the game. Maryville (1-1) trailed 45-24 heading into halftime after sinking only nine field goals total for the half, including two from behind the arc.

The Pioneers maintained a 15-point plus lead for a majority of the second half, but Maryville outscored them 14-10 in the final four minutes, getting as close as 10 points with 20 seconds remaining. After a foul by junior Drew Simmons with 15 seconds left, Wis.-Platteville’s Curt Hanson sank two free throws to give his squad the final 12-point advantage.

Maryville finished with an outstanding 52.6 three-point field goal percentage and 46.3 field goal percentage, but they failed to convert on 14 free throw opportunities, finishing 9-of-23 (.391) from the charity stripe.

Steinke, who was the lone Saints player named to the All-Tournament Team, shot 9-of-11 (.818) from the floor, including 4-of-5 (.800) from three-point range, and also added four rebounds, one assist and one block. Sophomore Matt Baker had 10 points and three rebounds, while fellow sophomores Jared McCoy and Jake Baechle scored seven points apiece.

Hanson led the Pioneers with 22 points, and teammates Mike Shaw and Josh Langenfeld had 16 and 10 points respectively. Kyle Tetschlag recorded a double-double for Wis.-Platteville with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Maryville will return to action on Tuesday, November 20, when they host nationally ranked No. 1 Washington University (Mo.), in their home opener at Moloney Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
