Women's Soccer Shuts Out MacMurray 4-0 to Win Second Straight

(Sept. 3, 2007 - Jacksonville, Ill.) -- The Concordia women's soccer team maintained their perfect start to the season with a 4-0 shutout of MacMurray College on Monday afternoon. Forward Natalie Brown (Sr. - Milan, Mich.) scored two goals while the sophomore contingent of Amy Zuccarell (So. - Ottawa Lake, Mich.) and Sarah Spader (So. - Warren, Mich.) each had two assists as the Cardinals posted the decisive victory over the Highlanders in non-conference play.
On a hot day in Jacksonville, Illinois the Cardinals (2-0) jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first half and never looked back. Concordia controlled the game and never gave their NCAA Division III opponent hope of a victory on this national holiday.
In addition to Brown's second and third goals of the season, two Concordia freshmen also found the net. Forward Lauren Harris (Fr. - Ypsilanti, Mich.) scored her first collegiate goal in the first half with the first of two assists from Spader. Forward Abby Lorion (Fr. - Plymouth, Mich.), who scored her second career goal in the second half, was the fourth and final goal of the day for the Cardinals, with Spader again picking up an assist.
Brown has started the season on a torrid place with three goal in the Cards' first two contests. Both of Brown's goals at MacMurray were assisted by Zuccarell.
Goalkeeper Kelly Wurzell (Jr. - Lambertville, Mich.) posted her tenth career shutout for the Cardinals, extending her career record mark.
Concordia has started the season with a renewed commitment to defense allowing only one goal in their first two contests of the young season. Two seasons ago, the team set the school record for fewest tallies allowed as they surrendered only 19 goals in 17 games. If the first two games are any indication, it should be another exciting and competitive season for the squad of head coach Piotr Westwalewicz.
The Cards will attempt to carry their strong play into the conference schedule as they open up their WHAC campaign with a home contest against the Saints of Siena Heights on Wednesday, September 5 at 4:00 pm.
