Westminster (Mo.) 82, Maryville (Mo.) 61
Dec 5, 2007

FULTON, Mo. — Junior Teddy McGrath’s double-double was not enough to give the Maryville University men’s basketball team a victory, as the Saints fell 82-61 to Westminster College (Mo.) in their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opener. Maryville falls to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss.

The Saints trailed by only three points at halftime, but a hot-shooting second half by the Blue Jays helped them to pull away and secure the victory. Westminster shot an outstanding 55.9 percent (19-of-34) from the field and 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from three-point range in the second half, while Maryville managed only 19 field goals total for the game. The Blue Jays also out rebounded the Saints, 43-34.

McGrath finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while also adding four assists and one steal. Sophomore Matt Baker was the only other Saints player to score in double digits. He recorded 13 points on 5-of-8 (.625) shooting from the field and 3-of-4 (.750) from the charity stripe.

Other contributors for the Saints included juniors Aaron Steinke (4 points, 4 rebounds), Drew Simmons (7 points) and Nick Hentis (5 points, 4 rebounds) and freshmen Chris Collins (9 points) and Ben Koopman (5 points, 3 rebounds).

Westminster was led by Andrew Buxton with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-16 (.500) shooting from the field. Jason Warncke added 17 points and five rebounds, while Landon Kurz had 15 points and four rebounds.

The Saints will look for their first SLIAC win again this Saturday, December 8, when they take on the Beavers of Blackburn College in a 1:00 pm game in Carlinville, Ill.
